This chart should answer 99% of the questions you have about watch brands.

Let's focus on *good* horological debate, and see some wrist shots please.

I was thinking this myself. Sea-gulls are, in my mind, roughly equivalent with Malaysian-made Seikos.

Anyways, wearing my new birthday watch today, ordered a brown leather band for it this morning which should get here on Friday.

To get some discussion going, how about we play the "Three watch collection" game- you get only are able to have 3 watches in your collection- budget is not considered. These three watches will be your only pieces for the rest of your life. Just to make it fun, you cannot choose watches you already have in your collection.

Mine:
1. Royal Oak, Steel, 39mm, Blue Dial
2. Datejust 36mm, two tone, jubilee bracelet
3. Speedmaster Broadarrow, original 39mm

Not the most unique selections, I know. The AP and Rolex sort of serve the same purpose, but smaller sports watches on comforable bracelets and hand-wound chronographs are my favorite types of watches. And honestly my MKII Racing would actually be my choice of chronograph, but I already own it!

If prices are coming down on pre-owned watches, and I haven't been paying attention to if they are, it might be good to buy from Archie's country from the USA. USD to AUD is currently 1.36, extreme in the last 12 months is 1.39 so we're pretty close to that.

Call up some of those aussies and hammer them on the price, and be rewarded by the favorable exchange rate.

Seiko is the most "in-house" company. Every single component in a Seiko watch is made by Seiko. Rubies, quartz crystals, springs, even the oils used for lubrification in the movement. Hands, dials, cases. Even Rolex outsources some parts. Seiko is as in-house as it gets, even on their cheapest quartz watch.

These next two are from Svend Andersen. This first one is the Orbita Lunae with a moonphase calendar, the date operates as a rotating disc and the basic function is only indicated by those little lines. The dial is hand cut blue gold and it is #16 of 31 pieces ever made. I almost bought this one right then and there but at $20,000 I decided to let it stew for a little bit.

Damn. Finally got some repeating integers.

The last piece is the Svend Andersen Day and Night, or Jour et Nult, this is piece 3 out of 3 for the collection. The minute register sits at the bottom, while the two other hands operate with a moon (on the shorter hand) and sun (on the longer) on them. When the sun is rising the longer hand is pointing to the outer arc of numbers, and as the sun sets going clockwise, the moon begins to rise and runs along the inner arc. Really fascinating piece as it only clicks to each hour marker rather than sweeping. This one was at retail for $19,000.

Nigga, he used to work for Patek doing grand complications, but then quit because he wanted to do things more interesting than what Patek was doing. Not him, but I remember reading something on WUS years ago. Some nip explained Japan's labelling laws, which, though better than most, are still kinda "loose".

Basically, something can be legally labelled "made in Japan/Japan made" if it was made in a Japanese owned factory (can be anywhere, even outside japan) and final qc is made under the cruel and watchful slanted eyes of a Japanese overseer. Japanese owned and run factories overseas are counted as little Jap colonies.

So, it is accepted that only very expensive Japanese watches are actually made on that archipelago. Grand Seiko/credor, citizen campaignola/chronomasters and a smattering of others like the Marine master (that might have parts made in overseas Jap factories).

Look it up yourself. Been a while since I read it.

Japs are anal about this kind of thing, so you'll occasionally get general consumer electronics from Jap brands that are usually made in say, China, have a small production labelled "made in Japan" to sell to the domestic market because Japs won't stand for buying local brands stuff if it's "made in China". Sony did this with their prosumer cameras and a whole bunch of autists would pay extra to try and get the "made in japan" domestic editions, hoping for better QC. lol, morons got a camera where the menus were permanently locked on Jap moonspeak.
>>
>>60325821

Like I always say, "made in" fuckery is all bullshit; it all comes down to trust.

Do I trust that GS are all totally made on those nip islands? Yes. Do I trust that all supposedly "Swiss" watches below rolex are full of shit and are riddled with Chinese made parts and labor to some degree or other or if one is lucky Chinese parts finished in germany (or of one is really lucky, actually plain made I'm Germany)? Yes.

I unironically like this watch. I bought it as a shitter to restore for fun and then maybe sell, but I'm definitely keeping it. Turns out the Amphibia tonneau is the GOAT case shape, maybe even better than the 710 Ministry (which I also own). Any other 090/commie tonneau owners ITT?

>Fallen Astronaut is an 8.5-centimeter (3.3 in) aluminium sculpture created by Paul Van Hoeydonck. It is a small stylized figure, meant to depict an astronaut in a spacesuit, intended to commemorate the astronauts and cosmonauts who have died in the advancement of space exploration. It was commissioned and placed on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 15 at Hadley Rille on August 1, 1971, next to a plaque listing the fourteen men known at the time to have so died.[1]

>The crew kept the memorial's existence a secret until after completion of their mission. After public disclosure, the National Air and Space Museum requested and received a replica of the statue. Controversy soon followed, as Van Hoeydonck claimed a different understanding of the agreement made with the astronauts and attempted to sell up to 950 copies of the statue. He finally relented under pressure from NASA, which has a strict policy against commercial exploitation of the US government space program.

>NASA, which has a strict policy against commercial exploitation of the US government space program.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_Astronaut

Isn't that basically the same to what Omega does with their Speedmaster bullshit? How do they get away with this?
>>
>>60326781
Maybe its somewhere in between him asking to do it as a comemorative piece and Omega actually taking up NASAs competition and making a watch that could survive space, therefore making them a private company offering a (later on) commercial product, not asking for permission or anything

>>
>>60326855
>Omega actually taking up NASAs competition and making a watch that could survive space, therefore making them a private company offering a (later on) commercial product, not asking for permission or anything

Makes sense, but they still exploit profit on that whole "moon watch" thing, engraving stuff, and making releases that has no connection whatsoever to the original moon watch, labeling them with the whole "moon/space concept".

Also, "NASA, which has a strict policy against commercial exploitation of the US government space program." Sound more like as a whole NASA has an issue with subjects exploiting the space programs, not necessary only on that particular fallen astronaut case.

Is the chronograph the most useless popular, modern complication? Does anyone here really like them? They put me off a watch entirely.

Why is for example pic related the most sought after steel sports rolex? For its predecessor there were waiting lists for years to get it. Shit, people were paying vastly inflated prices for the STEEL variant. I think at one stage it was almost cheaper to get the white gold version. All hype, I understand hype for a particular release.

But the chronograph itself? Anyone here use one on a regular basis? For what purpose? If your occupation required it you'd be using something more precise (if you're in research or athletics or whatever, a fucking electronic stopwatch).

The most common reason I would read on the net for using the chrono function was for
>timing muh steaks
Seriously, that's it. Must've read it a bajillion times.

Some people may just like the look, okay whatever, but I just don't get it. It clutters a watch dial (fucking breitling) and I find it totally useless and have never seen an instance where a chronograph in a modern watch has been useful in any meaningful way. Okay there was that one time during a lab when our stopwatch fucked up and we needed to finish the experiment and the taiwanese boy had some quartz wristwatch chrono that saved the day, but come on. A day, date, calendar, power reserve, fucking moonphase is more attractive than a chrono feature. I think the only chrono I could stand owning is one of those habring's with the crown pusher system, so that there's not 3 extra crowns on the watch and the dial and bezel aren't littered with a tachymeter scale that NO ONE ever uses nor knows how to read (anymore).

Spent the afternoon trying shit on; everyone around me was trying on ROO's and other heinous shit and I just don't see the attraction.

New? Yes it's a great choice and the entry level stuff is probably the best.

Used? Rolex has the 14270 Explorer I and 16570 Explorer II both under $4000 if you shop around and I think those would be better options overall and more collectible. Plus if you don't mind small pieces the ultra vintage area has "bubbleback" Rolex watches that often go for less than $5000 fully serviced and in perfect condition, including solid gold, certified chronometer ones.

not sure what you mean, the slide rule is the thing that "clutters" the navitimer, not the chrono

Anyway, I'm not a fan of chronographs either, because I don't like multiple subdials. The exceptions, that I actually love, are chronographs with one or no subdials. Two are sometimes acceptable. Three are always shit.

However, from a mechanical perspective, the movements in chronographs fascinate me. I just love a rattrapante, or seeing the back of a Datograph. But wearing a chrono day-to-day... No.
Unless it's a single-register or a Chronostop.

Rolex was actually offered to continue being the James Bond movie watch, but the studios wanted money and Rolex considers it undignifying to have to pay to get someone to use it as they feel their watches stand on their own merit. Meanwhile, at Omega, they paid literally ten million dollars to have Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig wear their Omega Seamaster Man in the Fucking Marketing Departments.

To be fair, if someone like bond WERE to have and wear a watch, it'd probably be some kind of diver. He was supposed to be a naval commander. I know, I know
>muh flemming explorer
but it makes more sense, story wise. Now, I doubt the original producer thought about this when then choose that particular model, but whatever. Didn't the director or producer just happen to have that watch on hand at the time?

By the way, that ref. for the original submariner seen in the connery bond films? It looks fucking TINY compared to the swollen, oversized bullshit chinkbait we have today.

There are dress watches today that look more robust. If they weren't going for crazy stupid ludicrous prices I'd love to have one. It retains an elegance it's latest incarnation has failed to obtain, and IT was an actual tool watch, not a piece of jewelry/toy for men.

I mean, the 16610 and 14060 kind of subs and dwellers were fucking FINE, for any size of wrist. That sorta sub I can see someone wearing with a suit. The new one I must admit is technologically superior, and it's actually still 40mm, but it looks chunkier and not as nice.

Hey, maybe i'm just salty that the ceramic GMT master (the black and yellow one) will never look right on my girly wrists. I mean, it doesn't look right on anyone around me, but I can't bring myself to go with the flow.

I went to a couple of watch shops today to try shit out with hilariously tragic results. I took some pics that /wt/ can raff over later, but I'll say that you never really know just how much of a wristlet you are until you try on the watches you've been salivating over online, in the flesh/metal.

As it ages it'll develop more character imo. Should start turning a darker brown. You could clear coat it, but that defeats the point for what I want.
I might get another one though, remove the dome and do a full polishing and clear coating to see how it would look.

If you specifically want to get a mechanical watch,
- if you want a swiss watch, get a Hamilton field khaki
- if you want a swiss dressier watch, get a Tissot le locle (don't do this)
- if you want a dressier watch, get a Seiko SARB
- if you want a less dressy watch, Seiko diver

Seiko represents good value at pretty much all price points. The 5 are pretty good as an introduction to mechanical watches, because they're cheap enough that you won't worry about damaging them, but also well made enough that they will wisthand some abuse. And they have a display caseback.
They're not prestigious if you're looking to impress people, mind you. As a Japanese brand that also makes very inexpensive watches, they don't have the clout of a "Swiss made" brand.
>>
>>60336341
No, it's the best value for entry-level-but-not-cheap divers. Get one on a bracelet if you can, it's pretty good.

To be fair, that ceramic black bezel defines the visual size, and it is only 43mm.

Still, the lug-to-lug is a respectable 52mm, so it's by no means a small watch.

>is it comfy?
This was at a local Seiko store, so I just kind of draped it over my wrist.
But that bracelet is supposedly double-jointed at every link, and it widens to 24mm towards the watch head, so it wouldn't allow the watch to flop around.

Also, dat fucking dial mang. See pic.

All-round beautiful watch, surprised there's so little buzz on the internet about it.

Actually the "real" James Bond of the books is more of a war veteran than a gentleman spy, drinking whiskey rather than martini, smoking like a mad man, and wearing "cheap disposable watches" which is mentioned countless times.

There's just one occurence where he wears a Rolex. That's it. Otherwise OG James Bond would have been the type to wear Casios, Seiko 5s and Amphibias. A "cheap japanese wristwatch" is mentioned I believe, also I seem to remember he stole that Rolex from the wrist of a dead bad guy, so it wasn't even his watch.

It's pointless to argue what watch a fictional character wore anyway, especially when it's become nothing more than pure marketing. Same with cars, guns, drinks... about anything he ever used. The books themselves were filled with product placement; it's no surprise James Bond later became that huge commercial franchise, because it was one from the start.

Everything else is just role playing and autism.
>>
This is the all time most based casio watch. CA53W > F91W
>>
>>60340988
You have this all wrong bub.

The cheap Japanese watch is given to him by a Japanese character, merely for expediency.

The Rolexes Bond uses in the novels are watches he bought for himself, because Rolexes were very much the G-shocks of their day. Before quartz, if you wanted good time AND ruggedness at the same time, you paid a hefty sum.

>he stole that Rolex from the wrist of a dead bad guy
That was a solid gold one, and this occurrence was several novels into the series.
Nothing to do with all the rolexes he owned before and after that.

I'm basically looking for a smaller diver. Would buy the 40mm Oris 65 if I lived in US, but in Europe they're way overpriced and importing from US would still be not worth it, considering it's a base ETA.
Now Steinshit, I'm hoping the rumors that they're making a 39mm watch is true, the only thing that bugs me is that it is a Rolex fake, (((homage))) if you will, still not sure how I feel about that. Co.ward designs are just ugly, just looked at some pictures and decided that there is no way I'm getting it.
Seiko, yes, I though about the 013 when I was in Japan, but here again it's a bit overpriced and the 7s26 is an outdated movement, imo (not that 2824 isn't, but at least it hacks)
Basically, what I want to say is that there is no nice smaller diver in the low end

>>
>>60341477
>he only thing that bugs me is that it is a Rolex fake, (((homage))) if you will, still not sure how I feel about that.
if that's how you feel about it now, you'll never be able to shake that feeling. If your first though was "wow, that's a nice looking rolex knock off" and not "wow that's a nice watch" then I recommend laying off.

Have a look at the citizen NY2300. Shorter lug to lug than the 013 seiko and it's 38.5mm.
Citizen autos are fine. I have a NY0040 that's serviceable enough and even that's not too large. Don't know how much they cost where you are. The round cased vostok amphibia's are quite small in person, too.

A cheap Waterman I bought in a supermarket years ago.
I got a Lamy Safari to see what all the fuss was about, and it feels really cheap and writes way too large (I got the fine nib but it's like twice as large as my waterman). And I can buy cartridges for the waterman anywhere instead of having to use the piston converter and fucking bottled ink.
So when this one dies I'll probably just get another one from the supermarket. The Lamy was a bad meme.

The mechanical pencil is really nice though. It's a Rotring 500, and it's much nicer to use than the disposable Bic mechanical pencils I had previously. I take all my notes in pencil during lectures and it's worth it to have something good to use. That was a good meme to fall for.

That handwriting is just about the best I can do, my usual handwriting (when I take notes) is really fucking bad.

I personally wouldn't pay more than 100 bucks if it was working in absoulte stellar condition (ie.serviced by a non-monkey yesterday) and if I really wanted it, but I wouldn't ever want it, so only you can answer that. Older sized model, probably what, 34/35mm? Does that work for you? Scratchy scratchy acrylic crystal and utterly boring generic dress watch design from yesteryear from a company that is long past its heyday and only exists in name as another soulless member of the swatch collective. There's nothing special about that watch in the slightest. Why do you want it? How much do you value it? Pay that amount.

Lamy also happens to make the absolute best steel stub or cursive italic nibs you can get. I lie their 1.5mm stub nibs better than even any of the solid gold cursive italic nibs I've tried (that weren't custom grinds). Of course, to get a Safari to flow enough ink to keep up with the stub you have to modify the ink feed to flow way more ink, but its still cheaper than paying for a custom ground nib.
