Too many things. But I'll TL;DR, if you didn't guess already it's because >muh autism
First reason, that I personally don't give a shit about, is waste factor: 100 plastic tubes vs one glass bottle of ink? Whatever, who gives a fuck.

Can't use the "cartridges don't hold as much as muh in-built" but that's not always true, either. Carts come in many sizes, depending on the pen in question.

My main reason isn't that I don't like the carts themselves, but rather because I don't like the pens that use them as they are IMO, mostly lazy junk. What I mean by lazy junk can be explained in watch terms too:

Consider the whole
>muh inhousey house
vs
>muh univsersal ETA generic shitter serbice anywher foreba spar perts

Same thing with cartridge/converter taking pens vs pens that have an inbuilt filling mechanism. The latter came from companies that had to put some original thought in the engineering and design of their products, whereas companies that use solely the former I see as lazy, having only to make a universal fit to allow any bajillion 3rd party carts or converters. Little thought, little effort. These guys usually don't even make their own nibs and usually purchase stock models from one of the few nib factories out there, same with their converters. I don't like that.

I want some evidence of effort for my money.

An inbuilt filling mechanism is a thing of beauty. A lot of work went into that device, and since they're patented they all a little different from one another. Converter/cartridge pens are all the same: empty shells. The makers are usually (not always, but usually) little more than pen case makers that slap on a stock nib and stock filling converter, just like the shitter watches we rail on that are stock "swiss" mvts, chinese cases - they're not watchmakers, they're case designers (and even steinhart and the like just rip designs off).

But, just as generic shitter watches with generic shitter movements are easier and usually cheaper to service, a C/C fountain pen is very easy to maintain and keep clean by comparison.

More variety in inks too, which is great and glorious. The best inks never come in carts.

If I wanted ease of use and practicality I would be using a ballpoint like most non-retarded people. I'm trying to indulge in the heights of an elevated writing experience, not slum in the doldrums of crude, utilitarian, disposable bic crystals.

If I wanted ease of maintenance and true practicality, I'd be wearing and only wanting quartz watches, or, hell, only use my phone like everyone else is today. But I don't.

Besides, I have bad memories of that shitty sheaffer my father thrust into my hands before he sent me off to boarding school; I persevered with that C/C piece of drying up, leaky shit for over a decade before the thought entered my mind to look for something better. Another decade later and I have too much better, and the amassing of more, magpie like, cannot be stopped as easily since pens are usually cheaper than watches.

Pic related, my current daily driver. Is its own special snowflake piston mechanism easy to clean? No. Especially with that fucking reserve pocket. But I wouldn't want it any other way because I'm a huge faggot.

If you want that look, I would seriously consider a tonneau cased Lemania 5100 chrono. They are still available used for less than that Sinn and have a better and more fliegerchrono appropriate movement.
>>
>>60345126
I would be concerned on the quality of the service it will receive from the seller and would take it to an independent watchmaker specializing in vintage watches as soon as you get it. I'll bet you it will need servicing once you get it.

Also, in general it's a bad idea to polish or rebrush vintage watches as it can often hurt their value compared to original unpolished examples.

The movement in those is a very good one, as I believe it's from Omega's 56x/75x family which was one of the best automatic production movements in the 1970s.

>>
>>60347677

"Second hand" might mean beaten to death in use, or just an opened box for display. Legimate stores have great pictures and are totally honest. Some people just return watches after a week.

Monaco has some great deals, "rich" people might buy something and just return it, the store just gets rid of it with profit since the taxes are so low.

And also one store has a policy where they state that nothing can be sold as new since the boxes have been opened, but essentially everything is new.

The Seiko 6sXX, 8Rxx, Zenith El Primero and Breitling B01 are all column wheel vertical clutch chronograph designs, versus the cam activation of the 7750. The column wheel and vertical clutch approach to chronograph designs is generally regarded as technically superior to cam actuation, see the following for some sources:

Now, while the Valjoux 7750 and Lemania 5100 are both cam actuated, the L5100 has a vertical clutch design unlike the inferior horizontal clutch of the 7750.

The L5100 also has the chronograph minute hand on the central register for ease of legibility, and has the chronograph minute and second hands directly driven which gives the chronograph function much greater shock resistance and less stuttering than the chronograph function on the 7750.

Here's some of Chuck Maddox's thoughts on the 7750 vs L5100:

Thankfully the seller is very established on various watch forums (I believe that is his main business), so I am not worried about the servicing being done improperly.

I also made sure that he knows that I want the bare minimum done on the case- I certainly want to keep the sharp edges, which he is aware of. I am giving it as a gift, so I just want some of the smallest love marks to be gotten out. The bracelet I am not so worried about the refinishing on, it has a conistent brushed finish and should be easy to satin polish to keep the original finish.

Good to hear about the movement, I've been trying to figure out which movement would be found in this one, as I know there is one particular auto movement that Omega made in the '70s that has a bad rep for reliability.

Filter "Condition:0" to see the grey market offerings of new in box watches without manufacturer's warranty. Don't actually buy any of that stuff; just a good price indicator. Shouldn't buy because most of these grey market dealers start sourcing for the watch in question only after you buy it from them, causing "shipping in 3-5 working days!!" to turn into "3-5 weeks later you'll get your shit". Just be careful with chrono24, just as you would with ebay. Approaching the few legit shops independently should garner a lower price as chrono24 charges a few to the sellers, causing them to up their prices by a few %.

>People have been wearing submariners with suits since forever.
>If it's decently finished and has the right design elements, there's no reason it can't go with a suit.

OK, just curious here: what design elements are you thinking of?
>>
>>60349054
More like finding the contact details of their shop or whatever off their chrono24 page and approaching their shops in person, without chrono24 as the middleman. If you try this with the shady kind of fucker you won't get chrono's protections though.

I don't know what fee chrono24 adds on, but there's no harm asking
>"sup fag, I saw you advertising _____ on c24, how much if I buy from you direct?"

Dependent on store. DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON ANY DEALER. Every time I've looked at it I've googled the names of whatever business to see what the forum peeps are saying about them. Sometimes there's warning signs, sometimes there's nothing (better steer clear), sometimes the only results are others like you asking answered questions on the legitimacy of whatever dealer and sometimes there's positive dealings. I'm heading to Heng Keng in week or so where I'll scope some shit out.

I know you guys hate swatches but this (Swatch - Once Again) is probably going to be next purchase.

I need something with a minimal design, day and date window, and lume. And I need this all in a small, weightless footprint.

The only thing I'd dislike is it having the classic Swatch tick.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this model? Does anyone have a rec for my requirements? I like the Seiko 5 line, but the military style model everyone shills is a little too visually busy for me.

>>
>>60350636
The strap lugs are non-standard, so you'll either be forced to use only Swatch straps or to get a Swatch-stlye strap cutter.

Movement is probably unserviceable, and maybe non-hacking even. Though I can't tell for certain unless you post the exact model number.

Other than these the watch if fine. I can't recommend you a Seiko 5, nor any automatic for that matter if weight is an issue.

Thanks for the non-sarcastic and actually informative post. That's a rare sight on /g/ these days. The model number is GB743 if that does anything for you. I didn't know that I'd be stuck with Swatch straps so that's actually really helpful.

Weight isn't a -huge- issue but I like to not be aware of a watch if I'm not looking at it. I've tried divers and it's something I'm always kinda registering.

No I don't, to me neither are formal elements unless you have a skin colour that makes cold unobtrusive.

To me, and again that might be just me, a formal watch should not clash with a white shirt worn under a dark suit jacket. And to me that calls for a white or grey face and discrete colouring. It should fit under the shirt sleeve so 2 cm tall wrist chimneys are out too.

I would be interested to hear what others consider formal design element.

>>
>>60370077
Tisell has something
>>
>>60371138
Most tags are shite but there are some cool pieces too.
Breitling has a lot of shitters too but at least Navitimers and such are alright.
>>
>>60371172
But how are they mechanically?
>>
>>60371183
How can you tell the difference between the shitter and the good ones?
Or are you just talking about looks?
>>
>>60371215
Hell if a $1000 TAG has a quartz movement worth $5, it's damn right to call it a phucking shitter.
>>
>>60371195
they aight
>>
>>60371172
>>60371138
Tag and swatch are the rot that eats away at switzerland
>>
>>60371278
Makes sense, but I'm more referring to mechanicals.
>>
>>60371326
So seems that the verdict is fuk Tag.
Bout Breitling? Mechanically solid? Good movements?
>>
>>60371377
the reason people don't like breitling is the designs, not the movements.
>>
can anyone guess what im working on here?
>>
>>60371413
Gotcha, thanks.

Anyone care to post their "worth" buying brands?
I know there's a few infographics out there, but they always seem highly contested.
>>
So what's the BEST watch under 50 bucks?
I already have a dw5600 and Seiko 5.
>>
>>60357092
I honestly cannot image anybody wanting a 41mm Rolex, or a fucking Datejust that is bigger than a Subby.
>>
>>60371553
you've got both good watches under $50 then.
maybe a vintage something or other, or a komandirskie
>>
>>60371553
there's no best, fucker

I'd say Vostok Amphibia tho, if it can still be had for under 50 bucks

>unique and interesting (history etc) despite the low price
>nothing particularly bad about it unless you hate the looks
>>
>>60371629
Fuck, forgot to mentioned that I also have an amphibia

then you have all the best, more or less

I guess some analog quartz watch might still fit in to cover one more "genre"

I've never owned one of these but I always thought their design was kind of cool, looks kinda 20s. also available without gold paint

To me, no.
Yellow is not formal.
Black is not formal.

Hi /wt/, I recently got pic related, has been fully revised and works well despite being 80+ years. It is however running too fast, gaining about 3-4 m a day.

Does any of you know how to open it and tune it ?

wanna take the chance of destroying the watch? do this:

the the little lever? regulator of the balance cock. push it towards the s by a bit with a small screwdriver. should slow the watch down a little. just dont slip.

I disagree, white (or some other very light) looks much better on formal attire, as long as the size is reasonable and the face simple.

Its not like "all black everything" is formal. The shirt is always white in such a scenario.

pic related, while I don't think its the best design, is the kind of design I'd consider the most formal (with some room for small variation, a gold case is ok and the face doesn't need to look exactly like this)

Formal wear in western countries is pretty much defined as "black and white". They're at the exact same level pretty much.

Let's not forget the main point here; and that's the fact that one autist is trying to claim that black is equally informal as bright yellow.
>>
>>60373635
>Formal wear in western countries is pretty much defined as "black and white". They're at the exact same level pretty much.
No.
>>
>>60373665
What makes you say that?
>>
>>60373635
>black and white
White tie is more formal than black tie.
>>
>>60373665
I guess it kind of depends, plenty of "formal" situations allow plenty of other stuff

but The Most Formal is black and white, that's what you'd wear to a funeral which I consider a pretty good measure for this (something most people attend in their lives, something where not pulling attention to yourself is the rule)

small watches are comfy as fuck m8

plus they actually look manly by making your hand look bigger
>>
>>60368118
>I always found cheap watches extremely interesting since these are the watches most people will end up buying.
they do not go that cheap, actually, and that is good. there's a pretty big difference between $5 watches and even the worst of overprices fashion watches, no matter what /g/ tells you.

the average person who needs/wants a watch will probably go to a local ship that sells them and buy something that looks nice to them

it will probably cost between 20 and 200 bucks and be from a recognizable brand (either watch or fashion)

it won't be super good but it won't be 2 euro chink shit either, maybe 20 euro chink shit

Lol, pic related is "white tie". Please tell me what two colors you see.
Now tell me what color dominates in terms of surface area.

Protip: the tie is the smallest item of clothing in a suit.
>>
>>60373851
>plus they actually look manly by making your hand look bigger
this. big watches make you look like a kid, unless you actually have a huge wrist.

Right. It's small. Like a watch.

YouTube how to open a pocket watch. You will have to pry open the back with a sharp knife. Do not use a screwdriver to adjust the regulating lever, just something plastic (like a plastic toothpick) to make it lessikely you'll damage something. Make sure you adjust the rate regulator and not the beat error. If you're not sure post pictures of the movement and we can identify.
>>
>>60373975
imagine him wearing all black with a black watch and it goes from "formal" to "movie villain or artist"

formal is "black and white", not either one of them

And either color is more formal than bright yellow.
