Yesterday I was asking for a lightweight linux version to run in Virtual Box. I had already tried Lubuntu and LXLE both failed because no pae and forcepae -- forcepae didn't help. So I just installed my first Linux. What are some essencial things you do after a fresh install? How to turn off telemetry and stuff like that? I'm also searching for any good apps like antivirus, firewall, defragging, etc.
>>
>>59886013
>How to turn off telemetry and stuff like that?
I don't think there is telemetry, is there?

Closest thing I can think of is Debian, when they ask during the install phase if you would like to volunteer in their (package) popularity contest.
And it's more for stats on what kind of packages are being used/popular, as the name implies.

I don't know if other distros have this as well.

I just infuckingstalled LXLE on my laptop because Windows 10 broke it (it just wouldn't boot up and it didn't have the Dell recovery image thing). Originally I downloaded LXLE for an older slower laptop but that one can't boot from a USB so for the hell of it I tried it on my newer laptop and it worked. Now I'm thinking I should have got a distro that isn't made specifically for old PCs like LXLE.

What are your thoughts on this and should I change distros?

Only idiots use pointless downstream distributions.
Pick one of the environments you like and then get the Ubuntu spin which offers it. I know Ubuntu can be considered downstream from Debian, but it's en exception in this case.
Once you familiarize yourself with it and you find yourself in a position that you need something else in terms of what makes up a distribution, consider switching then and only then. Do not switch for retarded reasons like "I like the looks of this".

you'd install everything on windows and everything would be windows, but you'd have a massive theme change, with safari instead of edge and what not; you'd be swapping windows' desktop environment for macOS'

a desktop environment is a collection of tools and software; in linux you can have installed different desktop environments in the same operative system installation

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Google, is in fact, NSA/Google, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Google. Google is not an evil corporation unto itself, but rather another corporate component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA PRISM project, Boundless Informant, and vital Bullrun backdoors comprising a full Ministry of Truth as exposed by Snowden.

Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Google”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA, developed by the NSA Project.

There really is a Google, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Google is the search engine, etc: the web apps in the system that direct the user's attention. The search engine is an essential part of an espionage system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete espionage system. Google is normally used in combination with the NSA espionage system: the whole system is basically NSA with Google added, or NSA/Google. All the so-called “Google” website is really the data collection frontend of NSA/Google.

So, can somebody give me the rundown on GPU passthrough? Everytime I look into it I feel like something is different.

My understanding was that you could share your hardware between host and guest OS, and so you would basically be dedicating a monitor to your guest OS and could treat it like a dual monitor setup. Is this not actually possible? If so that's kind of a huge bummer for me since it basically pigeonholes me back to Windows. (Especially since I need a Windows system for a few things more than gaymes, so having dual monitors is extremely helpful)

So is the dream dead unless I want to have two mice and keyboards?

How is it any different than building it yourself or getting a binary yourself? Look at the PKGBUILDs and understand what it's doing. It's usually a git clone, ./configure, make, and make install or similar or it fetches a binary from a (hopefully) legit source. That's why you look at it.

So no way to install it like a normal DE? If so, is there a DE that supports file searching on the Super Menu (Cinnamon doesn't count since it only applies to /home)

Recommended setups for coding with Vim exclusively?

I have myself a nice theme, syntax, a multiplexer (screen), a terminal application that allows for multiple panes in one window etc.

I guess what I'm missing now from traditional editors/ides are things like goto method definition, searching through code bases, having a nice file tree on the left-hand-side etc.

Any ideas?

All languages are going to have different plugins for vim, they set up a lot of stuff for vim like that. So there's not one general purpose vim idea plugin. You need like c plugin, python plugin, etc.
Most are gonna use nerd tree and fugitive though, so that's worth grabbing

Both of tray plugins are broken, the first one crashes my plasma after load, the second one duplicates tray icon after every e-mail sent. Furthermore, none of them can display unread count.

What normally happens is that vim figures out the file type and automatically loads your C plugins, or python plugins, etc, so your keybinds don't interfere with each other. It sounds more complicated than it is but it's really not. Check out youcompleteme for clang languages

So after Windows 10 broke my shit I listened to the Internet and installed Mint. And I am a bit lost. Help would be appreciated.

A website tells me something cant be displayed because no flash. So I go to adobe website to download flash and there are for options and Im not sure which to use.

The options are
APT for Debian/Ubuntu
YUM for Linux
tar.gz for Linux
.rpm for Linux

also when I googled "flash for mint" I found a tutorial saying that flash will no longer be updated for firefox and I should switch to Chrome. Is this true?

Thanks for any help.

oh and word of advice, it might be a good idea to stay with .deb based, ideally ubuntu-based distros for a while. generally best support since it's the most used, hence any problem you might run into has probably been discussed and solved somewhere online.

and it's pretty common for devs to offer linux ports in the form of .deb packages, can be a bit harder to get .rpm packages etc. generally it's always best to download through the official repos ("software store"/"manager"/whatever) but it can happen

>>59893590
over the years chrome has usually been the more stable / safe bet for linux flash support. adobe keeps pickung up / dropping linux support, chrome needs it for Chrome OS and has enough money and power to make ensure support

people will tell you otherwise but generally, you'll bump into problems (crashes, unsupported software / hardware) somewhat more often than on windows. games and productive software will be hard to find and a bitch to get running, if you're lucky enough that they run in wine. if there's actually a FLOSS alternative it's often less sophisticated and has a shitty interface.

there's only a few cases of genuinely nice linux software that beats proprietary alternatives. what's nice is that it's usually easier to find little apps and programs for simple tasks, since it's a hobbyist OS and so many people develop their own little programs ... eg i could find a tray webradio that supports custom links pretty easily on linux and even OSX, but on windows i only found shitty freemium bloatware or full blown audio software with tray options.

I'm trying to decrypt my drive at boot with an encrypted USB. How do I get my bootloader to prompt me for a password for the USB before using the USB as a keyfile for my main drive.
My systemd-boot config currently is setup for an unecrypted usb to be used
title Arch Linux Encrypted
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options cryptdevice=/dev/sda5:root cryptkey=/dev/disk/by-uuid/myusbuuid:vfat:/keyfile root=/dev/mapper/root rw

Is there something I can write to make it unlock the USB with passphrase first?
i tried
options cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/usbuuid:key
options cryptdevice=/dev/sda5:root cryptkey=/dev/mapper/key:vfat:/keyfile root=/dev/mapper/root rw

But this just looks for /dev/mapper/key (hasn't been mounted yet) then prompts me for a passphrase for /dev/sda5 (my main drive)
Is there a way where I can have it complete the first line before it executes the second, or have it in 2 different conf files and have the second execute after the first or something?
