Personally, I can use enough memory to need swap with 8GB of RAM if I use kdenlive on top of my normal usage. I use Genymotion sometimes too and it uses hella memory too.

Thinking about setting up my old box to run linux.
Its an AMD64x2 5600, 4gb ram with a radeon 260 or 270 gpu, cant remember exactly. I heard amd drivers on linux are terrible, is this still the case? i plan on using the machine for browsing and watching movies, no gaming at all.
Whats a good distro for a beginner? Ive used mint before but wasnt particularly happy with it, felt like using babbys first penguin.

I have a similar question that's really annoying me.

I have this in my i3 config in order to enable the volume keys on my laptop and out of the blue it just stopped working. I don't know what could have changed. Volume keys work fine in other DE's.

I don't think it will be an issue since it's older hardware. You'll just have to try and find out. Make sure you're using the proprietary drivers before you judge.

>Whats a good distro for a beginner?
Any of the Ubuntu flavors or one of the Arch based distros Manjaro or Antergos.

It's not that bad but I would still recommend staying away from any Ubuntu based distros like Mint or Elementary.

I don't hate it as this copypasta might make it seem, but I'd rather avoid it. If GNU/Linux starts to become truly unusable without it, I'm definitely ditching it straight away (use Arch right now, as void has too few packages).

I might try Manjaro openrc though, has anyone here used it?

What are the pros and cons of each interface, GNOME, KDE, XFCE? or is it purely superficial?

>or is it purely superficial?
It's a completely a subjective thing and a lot of people have more than one installed, I'd even dare to say MOST people do. You might get tired of using the same interface everyday and like to switch it up you know. In case you didn't know, you can install multiple DEs and choose the one that you want to use at your display manager (login screen). So any time you can just log out and log back into another DE Personally I have Xfce, i3, openbox and minimal installs of GNOME, MATE, and KDE. I like to keep up with those and it's fun to rice them. I use Xfce most of the time but sometimes I'll switch to something else for a day or two or maybe a week or two. And it's always cool to be able to show people irl different linux DEs and give them a good impression of it.

Kek. It's always funny when people make objective statements about subjective things. Did you just forget to throw 'in my opinion' in there somewhere or do you really thing like this? No hate on Plasma though, it's cool just saying.

I think Plasma is neat, I made this .gif some time ago. I really need to recreate it as a Webm, next time I login to it I will.

Does it happen in other file managers too?

I would suggest that you try checking your preferences in nautilus maybe reset to default and then delete everything in home/yourname/.cache/thumbnails and /home/yourname/.thumbnails so everything will be recreated.

Honestly though nautilus is one of the worst file managers available. pcmanfm or thunar are much superior alternatives.

>GNU/Linux Thread

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

I have a 600gb raid5 mdadm array made up of 3 7200rpm disks capable of roughly 160mb/s each and I'm pretty happy with the performance except that my reads are slower than my writes.

bonnie++ shows roughly 300mb/s writes, 120mb/s re-writes and 240mb/s read speeds.

Shouldn't read speeds be a good chunk faster than writes on a raid5?

Debian if you're genuinely interested in learning about Linux/GNU, Mint (or LMDE) if the idea of having to type stuff into a console scares you and you want to build up some confidence first.

If you decide to go with Debian, make sure to do a bit of research on the desktop environments you'll have at your disposal. Don't worry too much since you can always switch to a different one later on, but at the same time, it's going to be one of the most visible and tangible parts of your system - keep that in mind.

Install KDE Neon. It has an excellent DE and is based on Ubuntu which just works and is targeted for gaming. Neon also doesn't have bloatware. It's perfect for you.

Yup, just installed Firefox, followed the optimization instructions from the Arch Wiki, performance is ridiculously poor.
Even though this IS a low end laptop, Chromium works at least 3 times better. At this point, using my phone would be quicker than searching something via Firefox on the computer. I don't understand why it's being so slow, did I miss something?

Thank GTK/GNOME devs for that retardation. Their file manager also doesn't do this by default.
>>
>>59738378
That's the GTK3 filepicker.
Most distributions ship Firefox compiled against GTK3 but you can compile it yourself against GTK2, it's fairly simple since it requires changing a 1 to 0 in a single config file but the compilation can be lengthy.

There are distributions which still ship with GTK2 version of Firecucks by default.
Most notably debian.

Sure they can.
Forget about closed source drivers, ATI/AMD abandons their linux support roughly 2-3 years since the release.

I've been running Ganooo slash loonatix on a Mobility Radeon HD 2300 (which is based on an even older chipsets) with success using open radeon drivers for years now.
3d performance is absolutely horseshit tier (duh) but I've never experienced graphical glitches or driver crashing.

The most graphically intensive game I ever launched on this system was probably Gothic 2 using Wine so be warned, performance drop is substantial

Just some random secondary features that come to mind:

KDE has a really useful feature called KDE connect. This allows you to use an android phone (via an app available on both Play store and F-Droid) as a touchpad, keyboard, and media remote, while also sharing notifications between the two displays and allowing easy wireless file transfers.

KDE also has a lot of desktop widgets available, if you're into that. The folder widget can provide a good compromise between cluttering your desktop with icons and giving up desktop icons altogether. I will say that if you're coming from windows then KDE has a somewhat higher learning curve, though it isn't that bad. KDE wallet (password manager) on the other hand is an absolute pain in the ass in my limited experience, whereas I've never had any problems with seahorse (the gnome equivalent)

GNOME has very good Google Drive/nextcloud/onedrive integration, which is very useful if your school or workplace uses one of those services. Google drive appears in Nautilus just like any other drive that you can mount, and all of your google docs/slides are available in the gnome documents program. This is one of the main reasons that I use gnome.

One imperfection of gnome is the way that it handles docked tray icons. By default, these are put into an expandable "legacy tray" in the bottom corner that is hidden by default, which keeps the display clean but makes these icons less accessible/useful. There is an extension that allows you to move these to the top bar, but there is a tradeoff in terms of aesthetics.

But packages can still create files that weren't installed by the package manager.

So you still have to check your home folder, and also some packages that get run as root could end up spitting out things like config files and symlinks which won't be removed by the package manager.

You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. If you want hibernation to work, you should have the same amount of swap and RAM.

It's 4000MB or 4096MB?

Hello, I recently installed Freenet and now Java runs on login (no node is started however) and occupies most of my CPU for around five minutes.
Then, I installed OpenDNS, and now nm-applet often does not start after login and the network-manager service has to be restarted.
Fantastic. Any ideas? I listed all enabled services by SystemD and I don't see anything that would be running Java.
Thanks.

So I got Vanilla World of Warcraft to work in Wine and when I start WoW I can't hear any sound and youtube videos don't work.

If a youtube video is playing and I start WoW, still no sound from WoW but I can still do anything else with sound.

On Wine 1.6 when I go into wine configuration it doesn't see my USB Scarlett audio sound card unless I restart and make wine config the very first thing I open up.

On my Thinkpad sound works perfectly fine using the same version of wine and Linux. Xubuntu 16.04

Oh also when I do this no other programs sound works until I close WoW, and then if I want to get sound I have to restart my PC again.

Yeah so I've been trying to reduce the size of my btrfs partition, it's using 40G of 50 or so, and it kept saying it had insufficient space.

So then I reduced the size of the logical volume the btrfs partition was on, but the btrfs partition still wouldn't shrink.

So now I have an unshrinkable 50G btrfs partition on a 47G logical volume with 40G of data on it. How fucked am I?

So Ubuntu doesn't care about its Mate distro? Shit is buggy as fuck
>>
>>59744391
Turns out this is probably caused by some bug somewhere in a mate config. No clue where it is, going to use i3 in the meantime. Would still like to figure this out.

That's not the point of the post anyways. The filename says "All KDE packages and dependencies"
>>
>>59745626
They have similar package managers and almost the same packages, ubuntu have some newer packages(for example there's awesome 4.1 in ubuntu repositories while there is still 4.0 in debian unstable sid repository). The biggest drawback of debian would be it not having the unity desktop.

>All KDE packages and dependencies
Obviously you get more functionality when you get all the recommended software. You would have to install all those packages in gnome, xfce and anywhere else if you want to use them anyway. If you do not want to use them, just do not install them, they are not requirements they are just suggested packages.
>>
>>59745742
Why? At least it uses much less resources than gnome and of course KDE while remaining a full featured DE with compositing effects and all the convenient stuff like locally integrated menus.
