Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Windows 10 is so terrible.

I don't know what we are going to do.

When the latest hardware no longer supports 7, how will we carry on? It seems like Win10 just keeps coming out with new downdates that break shit and cause you to have to either spend hours fixing it or just plain reformat.

install ubuntu and call it a day

seriously, why stay on a sinking ship? I was never part of the linux meme until I bought a new laptop that had Windows 8 on it - it was at that point that I knew there was no going back.

It is 2017 now my friends, and Windows still hasn't been fixed since they came out with the original Windows 8. If they haven't reverted to what is tried and true - that is because they aren't going to.

Better to switch now and make it easy on yourself. While it is true that Ubuntu is easy-babby mode, it lets you switch immediately without having to go through trial by fire, you can do everything you could on windows, and eventually switch distros if you so want.

i dont' game anymore, but to put it in perspective, I was able to run Skyrim on Ubuntu when I still had a gaming PC, before I switched to thinkpads
>>
>>58989497

US? And price varies depending on the exact cpu, i7 2nds gen doesn't mean shit.

Either way, just based on the display, it was probably a low ene w520. $330 is overpriced.

Old x1 carbon were pretty shit, wouldn't reccomend an old one over a X/T series. If you want an x1 carbon get at least gen 3. Just be aware x1 carbons have basically everything soldered on except for like the ssd, so buy the exact specs you need.

>Would be better to use that money for upgrades.
Caught you right there. Do not spend money to "upgrade" a 5 year old computer. You will be stuck with it.

There are things like battery life, weight, thickness, DDR4... There are better things in life you can have if you don't put $$$ into an old Thinkpad.

Everybody loves to be memed, but a computer is an important part of life and work these days, don't put yourself through the "old Thinkpad" path.

X240 is a fine sturdy machine, better than the X230 and X220

>>
>>58991583
It's not a lot of vertical space but it could be worse. At least for me. I'm used to old Thinkpads and I've never owned a laptop with a higher resolution than 768p. I guess if you're used to more, this won't feel right. I couldn't use it as my main computer. I need at least 1080p to be really comfortable but for a laptop it's usable.
>>
>>58991583
both 900p and 768p are garbage
>>
>>58991632
Well I'm on a craptop with 1080p display right now, thing is that it's kinda starting to smell the acrid smell of a laptop contemplating its own death every time I decide I want to build a project. Been thinking of adopting a Thinkpad to use as the mobile work mule while I gradually phase out my current laptop to a desktop.

I've never been much a stickler for graphical fidelity, running fast matters more to me than looking good.
>>
>>58990549
fucking windows 10.
>>
>>58991446
Yes.

However the older X220 IPS screens suffer from bad burn in issues. This was fixed or at least wasn't as bad in the later model X220's and X230's.

I know because I have an X220 with an IPS screen and bad screen burn in.

I'm not sure if there's a way to tell by the manufacture dates or lot numbers if it's an "old" or "new" screen.

If I had to replace the screen I would go for an X230's IPS screen... The screen burn in is very annoying.

Surely the tuition expenses you paid included those maintenance and utility fees that, in addition to allowing the university to run and have functioning electrical outlets, should also completely undermine any argument that you stole anything whatsoever from them, because YOU PAID FOR THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

-The Intel 7260 Wireless 802.11AC/Bluetooth card works in a T61 with Middleton BIOS

-It DOES NOT work in the right-most mini PCIE slot, works in the original wireless card slot

-If you get Error 99 while trying to flash Middleton BIOS, go into BIOS settings and disable the security chip.

As with all T series slim models, it has the problem of a smaller battery (maximum main battery is 6 cell ~48 Wh, whereas normal T430 can do 6 cell ~60 Wh or a 9 cell). This can be severely limiting without a chunky slice since you'll net 5 hours at most

Otherwise, it's just a thinner T series with a magnesium alloy base chassis instead of plastic

Windows 8 or 8.1 would work just fine if you can look past the limited performance. Windows 10 shouldn't be that bad actually. It ran pretty smooth even on my T400 which had a Core2 CPU. If you want a Thinkpad tablet used for a good price, why not consider the X230? The performance is sufficient for Windows 10 and from what I've heard the hinges are a bit more durable. I think the X230t hinges are even compatible with the X220t but I'm not entirely sure.

As long as there's enough antennas it's fine. Ignoring any sort of voodoo, 11ac uses the same frequencies, just with bigger bands

consider a brand new 9 cell battery is 94wh. my i5-2540 jumps around 10-20w usage using the browser and wifi, depending on loading page, scrolling page, page idle as i read, background scrips, etc. assuming it averages 15w consumption from web use, that'd be about 6h15m expected battery life.

The overriding question I'd ask is this:

>am I important enough to be hacked?

I mean yeah anyone that can be converted to a bot is a worthwhile target when assembling a botnet, but I'd argue that as long as you don't let other people mess with your machine and as long as you operate it like an intelligent human being you're secure enough.

Most attacks tend to be against the human element anyway. A secure system is only as strong as its weakest link, and the human is the weakest link.

But don't take my word for it, I dabble in security as a hobby of sorts.

I was around all this time, I had an account with one of the oldest dial-up ISPs in the whole country in the early 1990s.

Basically we were doing exactly what we do now, but on much less hardware, and the computers themselves felt a lot nicer. Video was the size of a postage stamp but we didn't care.

I was able to access CUSeeMe for business though, and later PGPfone came into use. Years before Skype and much more secure.

Fair price, if its flawless then pretty much spot on, I think they can still go for $400-500 if it was FHD and 16GB RAM

If it comes with an AC adapter, its most likely worth it.

Unless you need them to make money. 2012-2015 Macbook Pros are the only platform to really be so far ahead of the curve in usefulness that you could use them for easily until 2020 without sacrificing productivity against newer machines.

I was able to get an SSD that fits and PATA's not too shabby for such an old machine. It runs Debian 8 with XFCE just great. Powertop consistently shows that I draw about 4-5 watts with the wifi off and my aggressive optimizations in place. Sadly the Atheros card I have draws 7-10 watts at all times, I need to fix that and I'll have an easy 15 hour battery life on the X40.

I've had two of them fail at the mobo level, and one the IPS burned in and I sold it as parts.

They fixed the burn-in issue on the later generations, but the x230 tablet IPS still had issues with displays and system board. Not as widespread as the nVidia T61, but something to watch out for as they age. If you screen flickers at startup or log in I would start looking for a new computer. It may do it for months, or days, you just never know.

Keep windows 7 or get Windows 8.1 w/ class shell.

As the other anon stated, Xubuntu is great, as its a lighter version of Ubuntu which is a super popular linux platform because of ease of use & packages.

You'll need Wine and Play on Linux if you want to play games or Windows only programs.
I'm able to play League on my T430s fine and Photoshop works.

Mil-spec IS a meme, but IP industry standard testing is not. If you ever see a product that claims to be rugged or mil-spec and they don't have an IP rating prominently in their advertising literature, it's a fucking meme. If they DO have the IP standards listed you can know how rugged your thing is.

>low voltage Pentium M
It's actually pretty much the basis for all modern Intel CPUs and runs circles around the contemporary Pentium 4's running full voltage, it shitposts and runs Dwarf Fortress and Quake 3 and will happily decode full HD video and show it on the XGA screen.

The SSD helps, but despite the fact that I have a big swap partition on the SSD just in case (yeah yeah but I've been doing this for over 15 years) it barely touches it. Also I have my own custom kernel with every feature lit up.

Took about 16 hours to compile the kernel while the computer was in full use, some day I will recompile the whole system and see how long that takes (weeks?) but it's comfy as fuck, gets a shit load of runtime on the battery, has all my ports for ham radio, and is overall just perfect for its application.

I have a real 'desktop' computer and if I need to do some heavy lifting it's just a ping away.

I'm guessing that running Linux will pretty much invalidate everything but the Management Engine but you never know. It'd be interesting to observe one of these properly in a fresh from factory configuration and see just what's what but I don't want to buy one new.

Maybe we can form a new industry standards body where we test computers and phones and TVs in a fresh from factory configuration and see how bad their botnets are. I would support a government-funded lab for this if they did it up right.

It was good for normies and functionally, to the user, worked identically to a classic themed modern Windows 10. It was much easier on the hardware though, you could run it on a 486 with 8MB of RAM along with your programs.

I preferred Windows 3.11 though, you could install some DLLs and run many Windows 95 programs.

I also used BeOS back in the day, that was a fine OS.

You should cycle it only once, let it rest, and then use it for a while charging it when it's no more than half empty. You might be able to regain some capacity.

yeah that's pretty damn good. assuming a fairly old thinkpad, the previous owner probably bought a new battery recently and only used it for a few months.

>more vertical space
As long as it's more physical space not just more pixels. Going to inferior aspect ratio within the same screen "size" (the diagonal) must be pain because you go from more physical vertical space to less.
>>
>>59007308
All my Thinkpads are operating in great shape except the T42 which needs to be opened up (just got it a few weeks ago, no time, etc) and I'm fairly sure it just has no RAM and / or the weak-ass X-series power brick I'm trying to use isn't powerful enough to get the thing going.

Inoperable junk laptops can be parted out and fund the acquisition of nicer ones, etc, and a 20+ year top-class Thinkpad in tip-top working order i worth money in Japan if you know the right people as well.

I'm in it for the long haul though, if something out there catches my eye I will be patient and get it cheap, and either make it work or get rid of it. My wife thinks I'm nuts but that's all just part of my master plan...
