IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I need a thinkpad for schoolwork. Gonna be taking a lot of notes and need it to have decent battery and fast for light gaymen

I'm seeing a 160 usd x230, a 120 t420, and a 180 t430

which one should I aim for? they all are in good condition with decent specs
>>
>>58964838
Anything you ordinarily use for cleaning glass stuff. I usually just use window cleaner desu.

>>58964936
The X230 will probably be the best fit.

Screen protectors for my x230t? Can I go with any made for a 12.5" screen?
>>
>>58965060
Why would you want a screen protector for a laptop?
>>
>>58965060
Is searching ebay really so hard?
>>
>>58965075
I'm afraid I'll scratch the screen with the stylus. A lot of awful condition x220t/30s on ebay but I somehow lucked out and got a really nice condition one for $100.

I also notice vertical pattern scratches on the bottom of the lcd on a lot of them. Is that from the keyboard?
>>
>>58965075
x230t is a tablet too. Touch and stylus screen.
>>
I believe that I want a Thinkpad T420 with the following specs

>1600x900 screen
>i7
>USB 3.0
>SD card reader
>webcam
>SSD
>Displayport

It would be used for watching video, music, reading blogs, 4chan, car ECU tuning, and some school work(electrical engineering technician). It would usually have a second 1080p plugged in and would be replacing my current desktop since I can move my torrents, four terabyte media collection, and light gaming to my old Core2quad Nvida GT520 desktop. I can switch the stock DVD drive for the stock HDD to make room for the SSD, right?

Is the T420 the right laptop for me? I don't mind paying up to $400CAD either already with those specs or having to install the SSD myself.
>>
>>58965196
t420 doesn't natively support usb 3. t430 is whre they started usb 3 support. there are express card adapters however for thinkpads i thnk

http://www.ebay.com/itm/122350157558?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Is this a good deal? I have an SSD and 8gb of RAM that I can use.
>>
>>58965196
You may need an XP laptop for some ECU software. Check system requirements.

For ECU tuning you also want the smallest laptop possible. If Win7 is OK, A X220 or X230 would be best.

For those other things, a larger screen might be better for you.
>>
>>58965196
You really want a T430. You could probably get away with one for $300 and hit all three checkmarks.

I have a T430 and I didn't have to replace the HDD or the disk drive to install an SSD. I just fit mine onto the second mSATA slot beneath a back panel. Granted it's not a huge one, it's just a little 120 GB one for booting into, but it allows me to use the HDD to access the 90% of files that I don't normally need on a day to day basis.

That, and the T430 has the better keyboard for general uses. All the memery around the T420 is for programming and how its laid out. It doesn't necessarily make the T420 a bad keyboard, but be aware of what the meme is.
>>
>>58965361
looks decent battery life might be shit though
>>
Bought my T420 yesterday. It came with Windows 10 installed. Formatted the HD and Installed W10 again. Now its asking for me to activate windows with the serial number, which I don't have. Beneath the laptop the serial sticker was removed. Didn't bother trying to get the serial in first windows because my last computer stored the serial in the bios settings. Am I screwed?
>>
>>58965196

>>
>>58965589
My X220 screen sucks.
>>
>>58965598
it does but believe it or not the tn panel on the x220/x230 is still superior to the one found on the t420/t430
>>
>>58965427
I see. Is there any reason I should stay away from a T430S? Is the only difference the battery or are there other changes?

>>
>>58965646
battery isnt as good as a normal t430 especially when it has wear its pretty much a 2 hour machine although it is considerably lighter and slightly thinner than a normal t430
>>
>>58965660
Would it take a bigger battery just like a non S model, or does the case of the laptop change? As long as a laptop doesn't weigh a hundred lbs I don't care about weigh. More would kind of be better so it doesn't go flying off the passenger seat during braking while fucking with ECU settings.
>>
>>58965679
the battery is a completely different shape and design compared to the non s model
>>
>>58965537
Remove the battery and look for it there.
>>
>>58965689
they only come in that 1 size although you can replace the optical drive with an ultrabay battery which will improve battery significantly that being said those batteries are rare and expensive
>>
>>58964936
assuming you are taking it on a college campus and will be walking - x230 is lighter

it will also give you better gayman performance as hd4000 igpu was a huge step up from hd3000

How useful is the tablet/touchscreen on the x220T?
>>
>>58968788
just stick some electrical tape on the top of the drive and leave like 2cm of extra tape off the end.
Then fold over the extra tape so you have like a 1cm grip to pull it out.
Make sure you put like 1-2 inches of tape on the drive though, or else when you tug on the tape it's just going to come right off the drive
>>
>>58968788
You can get a replacement cover+caddy+rails for a few bucks which is your best bet for the long term. Fresh fails will mean you won't have to worry about them stinking so much either.

Will probably sell my PC after I'm done with gaming.

Also, anybody knows how to boot win 7 and debian on an x230? Just partition, install, run in BOTH mode and choose whichever I want to boot up? It would be from the same HDD btw.

Thanks.
>>
How come x230s are cheaper than x220s on Ebay in Aus?
An x220 with an i5, 4gb memory and a 160gb ssd in good condition is ~$250, whereas an x230 with an i5, 8gb memory, and 180gb SSD is $230
>>
>>58970846
You should install Windows first, then create a seperate partition for Debian, then install Debian. After that GRUB will let you choose on every bootup.
>>
>>58970866
Condition? x230 is usually a bit better in performance.

Or it could be that thinkpad fags drive up the price since x230 does not have the traditional keyboard layout, for example.

Not all of the chips are defective. A very small percentage were. If a T61p is working today, it is gonna be fine.

Seriously find something better to do with your life than continue a nearly decade-old shill.

Go for some X series. X200 or X201. Sometime you'll find an X220 for less than $200 but these typically have some flaws. You can upgrade storage and RAM. In the X series the CPU can't be switched because it's soldered.

>>

That's a bit of a difference because if you swap it on a T420 you're swapping a second gen i5 for a second gen i7. The X201t has a first gen i7 while the X220t comes with a second gen i5. It's basically the same except the graphics is way better on the X220t. Concerning the HDD, an SSD isn't really that expensive anymore.

The T61 has unique properties (last 4:3 capable Thinkpad, has one less rootkit than i* generations), but there's no point going for the T400 when you could get a laptop that's a whole 3 generations newer (T430) for only a little bit more. I need 16+GB of RAM for multiple VMs.

I need SATA III SSDs for transfer rates, VMs, etc.

I need a screen that can be seen in anything brighter than a dimly lit room.

I need a battery that lasts 6+ hours without resorting to an UltraBay battery + 9 cell battery.

I need Wireless AC for transfer rates where gigabit LAN is not available.

I need multiple cores and multiple threads for VMs and multitasking.

I need HD4000+ for video playback.

I need USB 3.0 for transfer rates.

I need a stylus for controlling the PC when it is in tablet mode during a site survey for Wireless AP planning/troubleshooting.

I need slice batteries for 24+ hour unplugged usage while moving from site to site without a chance to plug in for more than 5 minutes.

I need DP or HDMI to connect to digital projectors and monitors.

plenty of sandy bridge thinkpads in people's hands that run windows, stream vids, and stay at a reasonable temp just fine. maybe the thermal paste needs refreshing

all batteries' capacity degrade over time. check how many cycles they've had with the power software. t420s is known for lower battery life than other thinkpads of that time, anyway. do your research before buying something

anything that's broken (keyboard, expresscard) on a used laptop is kind of your responsibility to fix yourself, or bring up with the seller if they misrepresented the products condition

as for your other issues, well, it's a $150ish used laptop. either live with a few compromises, or don't

I work in software development and web development and I'm looking for a cheap laptop to do that and only that, with long battery life

I was looking into a T420 or X220 with RAM upgraded to something between 8gb and 16gb

Any advice for sellers (where to buy the laptop and parts)? Is there a better model for what I'm looking for?
>>
>>58979298
I'd always choose a *30 series over a *20 series. The graphics performance is just that much better and they even support the classic keyboard. But even the new keyboard wasn't completely fucked up because it still had the dedicated volume buttons on the *30 series.

Sellers.... depends where you live
>>
>>58978905
In my opinion it is half the fun of Thinkpads.
>>
>>58979354
Well like I said I'm only going to be doing software development and web development, graphics performance is not important really. RAM, CPU, and battery life are my priorities.

>There is no way that the poster who constantly proclaims about how fast theirs is is telling the truth. My (admittedly base model CPU) G40 is slow as fuck with web browsing (firefox with uBlock) and is certainly more powerful than that little thing.
It's fast as fuck and gets 10+ hours of battery life with a new chink battery and my extensive optimizations. It will play OpenArena and Dwarf Fortress without a hiccup, runs a few Wine programs, and is overall comfy as fuck. No botnet management engine but it does have the trusted platform thing so I can store data extra-securely.

It is very nice. It is a patrician's IBM.

That broken palmrest is apparently "fixed" already with some superglue, but you can always replace it. But that's the least of your worries. That keyboard has seen a LOT of use which means the battery and everything else may have quite some wear.

I think my AC adapter is nearing its end, any time I bump it I've got to precisely reposition the cord for it to charge. Is Ebay the place to go for cheap replacement parts?
>>
>>58979840
Don't buy chink adapters. Buy a genuine one, or just let someone with soldering skills replace or shorten the broken cord for you, if that happens to be cheaper.

Is buying refurbished from Newegg legit?
>>
>>58980471
If you want long battery life and don't care so much otherwise, you might want something newer. **40 models for best battery life for price, **50 onwards for the sake of it being a better machine with a proper trackpad.

>>58980573

Alright. I did the FHD mod on my T420s. Fucking awesome screen. Love it. Only two problems: Temps are insane and it destroyed battery life. Both of which I sort of knew would happen. I mean, now it has to drive almost twice as many pixels. But gotdamn the colors are amazing.
>>
>>58981431
is it because of the screen or is it because of the additional processing power to push those pixels?

They have the potential for an extra 3 internal cells, and low power processors are standard with them. Sure, they're overpriced and otherwise mediocre, but if they're only seeing light use where the U processors can actually idle, then battery life should be pretty reasonable.
Granted, battery life alone isn't enough to justify most people buying something like the **40 models.

If you're looking for a device to do art with, don't buy one of the old tablet Thinkpads. The resolution is pretty low and the digitizer is only good for writing with. The performance would be sufficient though.

That's OK then. If you're doing engineering they're probably gonna let you edit blueprints or something. If you don't mind the 1366x768 resolution you'll be fine. Don't expect to run VMs or complex CAD stuff on it. It's an office machine after all.

I'm dropping $1000 on a Ryzen CPU/Liquid Cooler/AM4 Mobo/16GB DDR4 when it comes out (I've got the other parts sitting around), and $200 for an X230t, and still saving money because the recommended tablets start out at $1500
>>

>>
>>58984626
Jesus fuck.
>>
>>58986503
If the recommendations start at 1500 you should probably compare them to the X230t in detail. They could offer some features that the Thinkpad might not have. Like I said, the main downside is the low resolution and the aspect ratio. 16:9 with 768p is far from optimal for technical stuff. You should maybe look for something with a 3:2 aspect ratio.
