Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

This T420 was a wise investment. Thank you for the shit posting machine, /g/
I fucked up big time. I bought an Asus X205T for the size thinking I'd be able to get a functional Linux distro on there. I can't.
Wish I would lurked these fucking threads instead and gotten a ThinkPad.
It's a $200 shitty netbook that I bought manufacturer refurbished from eBay. Shit was like $120. Not a major hit to the wallet but definitely one to the ego.
I'm going to have to go 12" ThinkPad but now I know to do my homework.
pic unrelated, just bumping my question from previous thread
I want to buy t450s or similar newer thinkpads in India. My budget is around 50-70K INR . I'm looking for SSD + Backlit keyboard + Good Processor + 8GB RAM. ( Computer Science Major + will graduate soon) Small Screens will work perfectly fine. I looked over official lenevo India website but they don't allow customizations and most of the processors are still stuck at 4th Gen.
How does your trackpoint look like?
I just got a set of 5 soft rims from eBay and the first one is slowly getting darker after two weeks of use. I can't seem to get it clean in any way.
I have been using a cat tongue (soft dome, is it called?) one previously, and it has become completely dark.
Just have these on my T410.
Will probably put some stickers on the lid of my X200 when I get it. And have a spare Debian badge for it too.
Is the x301 as good as it seems?
>900p, 16:10 display
>sweet spot between x-series and t-series in terms of size
I thought I remembered hearing something about the CPU being sketchy, but I'm not sure. This laptop seems great, so what's the catch?
the X201 is very good, even these days.
i have the lowest-spec X201 and it still serves me great!
i have to get a new battery though, this one is from 2009 and holds charge for less than an hour.
Thinking of getting a slice battery for my x220t, will I be able to use that with my 9 cell? How much more battery life would I get? I'm currently only getting 2hrs running gnome with the 9 cell...
Why was the X205 the laptop of the year 2015 and not a thingkpad?
Serious answers only.
That means that I get that there are better laptops out there, laptops made out of metal, but it seems to me, that there are no thingkpads made with a metal chassis, are there?
so this is my baby
got it for about £200~
running trisquel right now
use it for entry-level deving
runs like a dream
screens a little dirty though, need to clean it, not sure the best means of doing so though
>get a T410s for $45 in an auction
>it's the touch screen model
One of the 90's era ThinkPads.
This one appears to have a dock attached.
Anyways, the special feature about these ThinkPads is that taking them apart is a lot like taking apart an enterprise server. Almost everything is toolless and put in its own organized little box that you just pull out and you're done.
A lot like modern Panasonic Toughbooks.
I believe it's widely regarded the opposite. x201 is preferable to the s model because full voltage processor and "normal" battery. Unless you're the DYEL-muh-thinness-aesthetic type in which case why the fuck are you even looking at anything but fagbooks?
Development hell. It's still ongoing, major issue right now is sourcing the 16:10 panel.
Personally I don't see why they don't just swap to 3:2, it's practically the same.
Of course 4:3 would get me rock hard.
So I've got a T430, and the touchpad in Windows is literally unusable. When I try to use 2 finger scrolling, it will jerk up occasionally when I'm trying to scroll down. It's glitchy and jumpy. The whole touchpad will also just freeze occasionally. This makes it pretty much unusuable. However, in Linux? Works flawlessly.
Am I just stuck dealing with the god-awful Windows drivers, or is there anything I can do about it?
hello folks./ Glad I found this thread!!
I am in need of a budget laptop
Something I can play diablo 3 with no problem
What about this one?
Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop Core i5 2.40Ghz 1440X900 LED 8GB RAM Windows 10 Pro
budget one. not wanting to spend more than 300 but if i have to i can wait a bit
Be reasonable, 4:3 would've faced the exact same issues they're having with 16:10. Only worse because while there are still companies manufacturing 16:10 screens for Apple, literally nobody makes 4:3 screens anymore.
almost switched to a W540 but i noped.
>dat ssd speed.
Needed a new laptop so i bought this for 300$. i5, ips, 8gb ram, 120 gb ssd, new lenovo 9 cell battery and ultrabase. also pretty clean besides the keyboard (ill replace with a x220 keyboard later) How'd i do?
>I took the picture upside down
>It was super zoomed in with a shitty phone camera
Whatever its still a ballin sticker. Pic related is a sticker I got from a big league chew bubble gum pack. You're fucking jealous and you know it.
have you tried washing your fucking hands, pajeet?
because once it's on ebay it's competing with every other laptop with similar specs. normies don't give a shit that it's a thinkpad they're just dads looking for a cheap laptop to use to jack off in the toilet with
Is there another brand that does the same as a TP? Long lasting, durable work laptops?
I was thinking of getting a P-Series but it's price is above my budget
Don't listen to
I've got an Elitebook 2570p that I can run D3 on fine on low settings (except textures which i run on high) @ native res and it's fine. If you wanna go mega cheap do this
x220, quick little machine. Christmas present to myself, $120. Ordered a new battery, replacing the screen with an IPS soon. Any uses ya'll can think of for the express card slot that won't make it a wasted param?
What do you guys think of this?
I just want something i3, SSD, 'professional' line without having to trawl through Used sellers.
Any shoutouts? Going do a 'review' of the W700ds, and X1 Carbon 2/3.
These still go for $200+ wow
>sell two W500's four years ago
>put them on buy it nows, one sells for $180, listed them for $200
>put the one that didn't sell on auction for $170
>it sells for $240
And thats why my auctions start at 99 cents for recent laptops
I got more watchers on the broken X1C2 than the perfect X1C3.
I own an X300, and a X200, they are pretty lackluster in today standards.
If you could I'd get the X201, and if possible do the AFFS mod if you can find it priced right, if not, an IPS X220/30 would serve you well.
However, the X300/1 has one of the greatest feeling typing experiences I've had, hands down the best of the Core 2 Duo era probably the best keyboard Lenovo had made, there's like no flex.
Yeah the screen sucks, TP user 600X went to great lengths to get an IPS mod.
agree with >>52347930
it's comfy as h*ck and surprisingly thin. if all you want it for is web browsing/light stuff it's completely fine. don't pay much for it since it's a cuo2duo
No there aren't unlike the Elitebooks and some latitude/precisions.
But even the original models were designed with hardened plastic, only until the 600X came along did it introduce the magnesium sub-frame.
Time for you go get a Toughbook or Getac.
wow, I never knew that there were a touchscreen version of this laptop...
Is it IPS? This is very interesting to me.
I just sold my 365XD, the only oldest thinkpad I have is a 700.
Nice, my 560 isn't working, few years back there was a 570 with the original ultrabase or whatever they called it, I didn't really had much money to buy it but I wanted to.
I think the 755CE has the best feeling ThinkPad keyboard I've ever laid my hands on.
Can't wait :D
>on a ThinkPad
what the fuck are you doing man? The second you buy a ThinkPad you should immediately start using the TrackPoint 24/7. I can't even believe how was I able to use a laptop without a TrackPoint before
I agree. Typing on the 755 is amazing. It has a permanent place in the useless stuff i need category. I will even rebuild the battery soon i love this thing.
I would figure older 15" and 17" MacBook Pros should be accepted because they were designed as workstations, maybe desktop replacements at the time.
But /g/ still hates Apple, are there macbook generals?
Because thats how OEM manufacturers work.
>"buy a laptop from eBay, thats sketchy, theres probably something wrong with it! It probably smells like cigarettes and has pube hair, plus it doesn't come with a warranty either! I'll stick with this one from Lenovo, because I'm paying for quality!"
They got for $400 used in burgerland.
I would avoid, its not going to look like that at all...
>not buying from eBay from sellers who provide original photos than non stock
Actually, you're the type who goes to eBay and buys geeksquad insurance. You should do that instead, unless you buy a used laptop on eBay and do not look back that you want "something to work for a long time".
I hate the proprietary power connector, luckily I got a cheap adapter for it that adds on from the original IBM AC adapter.
Mine didn't work sadly, its gone to a better place.
So in min school we are using Thinkpad X131E laptops and i think they work pretty damn good with specs but the quality on the mousepad and the plastic are pretty mäh.. So, in a couple of month (3-5) i will start in a other school and i can buy this computer school gave me. Should i buy it or spare some money and get something else for getting work done? I like it pretty much and i already have a PC so this will be my first laptop.
Acid hasn't wore off yet.
People who post newegg links or amazon links are discouraged from buying on eBay.
They see amazon/newegg are trusted sellers, hence it will 'work for a long time'.
I presume you aren't trusting eBay, even though the buying guide recommends eBay or local sales, which you did not look for.
People who don't buy from eBay are the types who had one bad experience because they were a noob buyer or heard a horror story of someone buying shit (another dumbass probably buying a $10 iPhone expecting it to work)
Buy from arrow direct.
>not posting the price you paid for it
Sure anon, you did well, *pats their head*, now go off and play with the gang. *slaps butt*
Are there any thinkpads under 250$ Would allow me to play basic indie games and Runescape with decent fps? Mainly Runescape though (The new version, not oldschool)
aif thinkpad can't do it, any other laptops under 205? preferably new, because you guys always say that "oh yeah you can fins a xxx for like 190$ easily" and then I look that shit up and its a 400$ laptop, and I have no clue where I could get it for that cheap.
That was not me who posted that picture then, but I am here now.
/tpg/ is the only reason I come back to /g/, otherwise I hangout on lainchan or 8ch.
Stupid question alert. I'm currently using a Thinkpad X201 (excellent laptop, btw) with Linux. I'm on the 4.3.3-ck. After the update to this kernel version, all audio stopped working entirely (headphones, internal speakers, etc). Does anyone else have this problem? Or does anyone have any possible solutions?
Not dandruf, white paint speckles. I purchased the chair from good will, it was only $5, and it had it on it. It does not bother me and the chair works well.
every drop of water you've ever put in your mouth has likely at one point been another animal's piss
No shit, but I only drink filtered spring water. So it's clean, and is nowhere as nasty as sitting on someone elses dead skin. and yes I know particles are everwhere, but I'm never sitting directly on their lumps of dandruff.
Honestly i'm looking for something that can run some basic steam games such as Tf2, Counterstrike, Payday 2, ect.
Is there anything that would be good for that and basic browsing that's not over 500$?
Is this a good deal on an X220? It's recertified.. how is that different from refurbished?
Anyway I'm gettign the 8Gb version for 263, how's that sound?
I just want to play Runescape 3, and possibly a few other steam indie games on it. Multi task with skype/teamspeak, and spotify.
Can it do it?
>bit more expensive impersonal refurbished units from a company who has a good reputation
>cheap used version from someone who has left their bodily fluids and other personal shit on the product
hmm, which is the better argument?
Know anyplace that sells this?
Google isn't bringing it up.
>The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
the only liquids that safely drain out are ones that slowly, slowly pour onto the keyboard
any normal spill puts so much water on the keyboard that the spill drains can't keep up and it all goes right into the case
This is 4GB version but its 100$, should I buy it right now? Quick /g/ I want to play Runescape, would this let me to do it for 100$ (Is this how ebay works, or is that 100$ price a bid?
>“This laptop has dead pixel near the center of the LCD. It has scratches on the casing and it has wear on the corners and edges. The left side of the keyboard casing is cracked and it has wear on the touch pad.”
You sure you want to deal with that? I know it's only 100$, but that sounds a little "too" fucked up.
what LCD screen doesnt have at least one dead pixel?
and that sounds like a normal amount of wear and tear on a laptop
replace the hard drive nad it's fine, all that shit's cosmetic
Mine just arrived just yesterday. How do you like the trackpad? I was apprehensive at first, but then it grew on me and now I'm diggin' it. Also, These keyboards are a dream to type on. How can machines this awesome be so cheap?
that amount of wear suggests a laptop that's at least two or three years old. i dont really trust laptop harddrives older than about 4 years, and with a machine in someone else's hands that's maybe 2 or 3 years old, just replace it
Okay, well I'm about to buy this 100$ 4Gb X220 right now. I just want some last minute advice from thinkpad pros.
First, here's the machine (Albeit a lot of cosmetic issues, it's still really cheap)
1. Will I be able to do the following at once.
>Play Runescape 3
>Use teamspeak 3
>4-5 tabs open in firefox
All at the same time? Is it a good CPU to play Runescape on it? (Remember Runescape 3 is a little bit more uptodate than you may remember.
So, can this laptop run games like WoW, and possibly LoL?
Lastly, and unrelated.. What sort of laptop CPU/GPU would I need to effectively run csgo?
How much is a basic 7200rpm laptop HDD?
My trackpoint buttons don't work, might be a driver issue. I've configured my trackpad to just be buttons and gestures, while I use the clitmouse to move. Its a great set-up, but I normally end up using my little mouse while at home / not at the office. Love it though, for as cheap as it is its a hard worker.
somewhere between 50-100 dollars
if your budget is a little tight you could probably get by for another year or two, the failure rate spikes at 4 years but it's not like it's a guarantee
keep regular backups of important shit and put some money away for a new HDD
Why are you buying a business laptop for gaming? Why not use your current machine for that? Is it not a laptop?
Just upgrade the ram, strip the machine to its essentials and watch the heat. Sandy Gate is a pretty awesome CPU, but I wouldn't push it too hard.
There is no such thing as a "laptop" ssd. Both desktops and laptops use 2.5" ssds. Get a halfway reputable manufacturer, and you're looking at like 5 years. Samsung, intel, kingston, adata, all solid manufacturers. OCZ makes the fastest, but they sometimes just die.
Well help me out brother, I only have a 6 year old netbook that is struggling with just this webpage. I have 260$ and want to play some light vidya. How can I make that a reality
I don't want to build a desktop because I have no space for it, and even if I did, I would have to buy a monitor for it.
Yes an X220 with an i5-2520m and Intel HD 3000 graphics can run RS3, LoL, and CSGO pretty effectively. Haven't tried WoW but I assume it should also run fine on lower settings like the other games.
Battery on the regular T420 is better.
An x220 that's in good working condition, will. That one, probably. Looks like it'd be pretty fucked up though. Spring an extra 30 bucks and find out in better condition. Cosmetic issues mean more than just an ugly machine, it means it wasn't well taken care of. Hardware can only afford so much abuse.
Been a while since I was here. Did anything come of the Retro ThinkPad yet? I know I would've heard if it was out, but any news since all the surveys?
Also I heard there were some new ThinkPads at CES. Were they decent at all? (asking this as an X220T/T420 user)
Do you really want the x220? Find a T420 with Nvidia graphics. That'll be a beast and you can find them for around $150. Ebay is the place to look, just make sure its from a verified buyer and that they have at least a 30 day return policy.
Not cyber bullying, just remembered how retarded you guys are.
This bad boy looks solid.
I disable the trackpad via bios on all my ThinkPads. That doesn't make it go away.
I don't mind when stuff is thick, in fact I think it's way better than this stupid thin technology meme, buit when you have surface area wasted with shit like a trackpad it makes me pretty mad honestly.
Just dont see a point of workstations without gpu even for a laptop, except if you dont want to pay alot so you take this ugly ones as replacement, why not stuff like dell x13 and similar beauties
Hello, I am new to /tpg/, going to buy one. Checked the buy guide, found out there are pretty cheap X230 options, then realised it has the AIDS keyboard, should it concern or not?
tl;dr Is AIDS keyboard really bad compared to thinkpad keyboard? Thanks
The newer keyboard is really not that bad, the main concerns are spacing between keys and layout, even if those two do bother you, you still get one of the best laptop keyboards on the market.
I deal with older thinkpads at work, personally use an x230t, don't really mind the new keyboard.
Well, unless your schoolwork includes any real computing (modeling, video editing, heavy programming, music making) you can pick more or less any model, with T420blazeit being the overall recommended unit, at 14" and 5 pounds, or the smaller counterpart being x220 at 12.5" and 3.5 pounds.
both cost around $100-$200 depending on the specs.
You could also look into the T5xx models if you need a 15" device.
It's really all in the wiki negro.
Also consider the tablet models for comfy transforming touch screen+stylus and delicious IPS screens.
I recently got handed down an s440 from a family member. The laptop is great but the screen is really bugging me... The viewing angles and colors are absolute shit. Is there anyway to switch out the panel for an IPS etc? The model I have is touchscreen but I dont really care for that feature desu
free advertising for something you don't use...
>he thinks we hate the keyboard just because it's chiclet
wow are you kidding me? we a lost a whole row of keys and we've got weird shit like print screen on the bottom row
it's also bad for being chiclet but that's not at all the main reason we hate it
