His corpse spent a good amount of time locked alone with a magical helmet that kept you from dying as long as you wore it, when the submarine he was in sunk and he drowned to death. He first appears in an Abe Sapien story as a zombie, but eventually regains his intelligence, and gains even more. The super-strength and endurance parts are unexplained, however. Could be a side effect of the artifact.

I find that particular arc somewhat weak (the artist, the exposition as if Liz and Johann don't know each other and their deeds, Johann becoming religious outta nowhere), but it's understandable that they'd be pissed off about one of their long-time buddies dying because the not-dying man ordered him to do something he could've easily done himself, and then his corpse being used so expendably.

Easier than you think.

Through bullshit Nazi-Zinco science-magic, they managed to detect a human soul within the prison of the Ogdru Jahad. Kroenen and Kurtz presumably used machinery similar to what was used to summon Hellboy to do so. The machinery then summoned the soul down into the body. But it was the soul of the Black Flame... if it was the original, Pope, or some sort of primal elemental evil we may never know.

The "monk", Lazar, is a little more mysterious. There seemed to be indicaiton that he was possessed by Rasputin. Possibly the Ogdru Hem spirit that infected Lazar facilitated this in some way. I thought that Rasputin had fallen to Hell after his soul was slapped out of Baba Yaga's hands, but with her power at least marginally returned thanks to Hellboy's eye, she might have given him one last helping hand as well.

If it WAS Rasputin, then it's just another example of his type of fuck-up. He always thinks everything has to happen with him as the center focus, so he went to a spot with strong geomantic powers, and sat above an Ogdru Hem while working on waking it up. Then the Black Flame returned and concentrated for a few seconds to "light the beacon" for the rest of the sleeping Ogdru Hem.
