IMO Andreyko, at least here in Manhunter, is kinda like Bendis done right. The decompression isn't a big deal when you're genuinely interested in the story, like a good TV show.

If you haven't read the rest of Manhunter, some of the things here might leave you a bit lost. But this arc was also kind of designed to be a jumping on point, since the comic was at big risk of being cancelled.

And at the end of the arc it WAS cancelled. So at least half of issue #30 is devoted to wrapping up the whole run. And most likely I'll only be posting the Wonder Woman-relevant pages of that issue.

Funny enough, Manhunter as a whole is basically the polar opposite of Wonder Woman, yet Andreyko totally captured her personality better than Rucka IMO, which makes an incredibly interesting dichotomy between her and Kate.

Hey Tex.

Oh, Kate Spencer, you utter train wreck of a woman. I kinda love her. She is such a huge pain in the ass, but I can't stay mad at her because she's still fucking great even though she kinda sucks. She's like a more mature Max Caulfield pushed through a filter of Ally McBeal. And it somehow works.

Pairing her up with Diana was an inspired move, since this arc brings out the best in both of them while acknowledging their flaws.

We can't have butches anymore, cause people will whine about Tumblr and what not.

Well okay, to be "fair", it's also because a butch character theoretically requires drawing something other than a generic supermodel figure, and I'm pretty sure most artists would respond to such a request with a gunshot to their own head.

I like the idea that Diana knows it was the shittiest thing ever that she had to do, and that it's alarmingly uncharacteristic of her.

See, that's an interesting way to deal with having a character in a contrived situation like that.

When people ask shitty questions like "if you had to choose between someone killing your mom or your dad, who would you choose?" I just don't answer, because that's a situation that 1) will never, ever actually happen and 2) is just not a choice at all.

That's how I see stuff like what Diana had to do. She would never do it, but was in a situation where she literally could not do anything else, and so just has to deal with that. And deals with the feelings by saying "I can't spend time regretting it, because I did what I had to do, and what anyone else would do".

Why does everyone look like they have jaundice in this comic?
>>
>>91789994
Nah. While butch lesbians(especially butch lesbian cops) are a bit of a stereotype, it's not like they don't exist. Plus they tend to be portrayed as far less obnoxious than their male counterparts, the flaming gay guys that only really exist in movies. So overall, I doubt the "Tumblr" crowd would have a problem with her. Shit, she'd be supreme waifu material really.

Byrne made her? That's vaguely uncomfortable.

Then again, he also made Cassie, and that's very uncomfortable.

>I won't destroy that for an easy win
And I don't know if that was an intentional dig/lampshade of my theory that the whole thing was DC saying "one of the trinity has to kill someone" and Diana was picked because Superman and Batman were just too famous.

From my experience on Tumblr, the social justice cult hates literally everything. It's like a contest to see who can be the most offended.

It's almost literally mirror /co/. No matter what you do, they won't be happy.

Butch lesbian, that's a stereotype. Hot lesbian, that's a stereotype.

That's why you just ignore Tumblr and /co/ and Twitter and do what you feel is right.

>We're a tad too early in Diana and Steve's rekindled love, though
It also doesn't help that Rebirth has yet to elaborate on whether Diana is a golem or not, though we can assume she'd still give birth like normal considering her body functions like a human's anyway.

Regardless, the other alt-Trinities have been getting good sales and positive press, so it may only be a matter of time for Jon and Damien to get a third playmate.

Though odds are even on that being Lyta(because Johns), or Cassie pulling babysitting duty.

I would love to see Diana have a kid but I have a feeling that it would not go over well with a lot of her fanbase. I want to believe but then I get flashbacks to the reactions of Wonder Woman Earth One and Jill Thompson's Wonder Woman comic.
>>
>>91792228
>reactions of Wonder Woman Earth One
They were mostly positive from what I remember, with people throwing out little nitpicks here and there.

I dunno, I'm a huge Wondy fan, and I love to see her have a kid. And again, they wouldn't even need to make up a new character, just pull Lyta out of the junk drawer.
>>
>>91792297
I could have sworn that the Earth One comic was getting a decent bit of bad rep, maybe it was just on CBR.
>>
>>91792297
>>91792486
Naw you're not mistaken, it definitely got some hate thrown its way.
>>
>>91792486
>>91792523
Not really sure why. It was a good story that had balls enough to actually explore the Amazon's culture without demonizing them.

And this is coming from someone who usually hates Morrison and his bullshit. For once he managed to knock it off with the meta shit and write an overall solid piece.
>>
>>91792669
There was definitely some vocal disappointment.

I think it's because it was hyped by some as something that would be Wonder Woman's defining story. And as we know, a lot of people have this idea of what Wonder Woman is, and that doesn't line up with what she actually is.

Unlike with All-Star Superman which changed a lot of people's minds on what Superman should be, I think these folks read Earth One and went "well this isn't what Wonder Woman is supposed to be, it's just the same problem her other stories have".

It's telling that a lot of comics sites were speculating that Earth One would "replace the Azzarello/Chiang run as the definitive Wonder Woman story".
>>
I read part of the Perez Wonder Woman trade today and now I regret not paying attention to this.
>>
>>91792669
Okay so here are two reviews and I'm gonna be biased myself and say that I'm linking the first one mostly to show the problems some people had with the book on release and the second because I think it addresses a lot of that from another perspective, was more like what I took from the book (but the author has definitely done a more in-depth reading than I did) and gives very just and due credit to the art & design:

comicsalliance.com/morrison-paquette-wonder-woman-earth-one-review/

comicosity.com/review-wonder-woman-earth-one-hc/

I kinda want to talk about review/criticism sites here but that's definitely not related.
>>
I'm personally definitely there for any continuing WW Earth One stuff and would be very interested in anything else from Jill Thompson moving on the storyline from The True Amazon too. Neither of those were fast books but they both went and pointed to interesting places, and I liked how Thompson's one felt like it was rolling in the vein of ancient Greek hero origins.
>>
Thank you
>>
>>91794596
I totally loved both and definitely wanna see more stuff like them.

I actually wish Rucka and Scott's Year One wasn't just part of Rebirth because it would have been killer if advertised and sold as a standalone.
>>
>>91794509
That CA review surprised me by how in-depth it is, though it's kind of annoying how the author seems to criticize aspects of the book simply for not aligning with her own personal views of feminism. It's silly because the author even admits to being aware that the book is rooted specifically in the HISTORY of feminism, not in modern feminist views.

I notice with both of those reviews that the book seems to really draw out the personal views of both authors, going really, really in-depth not only with their interpretations of the book's themes and what they mean in the context of comics and Wonder Woman but also their own opinions on, well, everything feminist or sexual.

To that end, I think Earth One must have been a success, because possibly for the first time ever, Wonder Woman tapped into peoples' most basic feelings and emotions dealing with sex and gender dynamics, and forced them to face and work through them directly.

Getting that from a superhero comic in this day and age is absolutely insane.
>>
>>91788520

I think everyone is entitled to a bad run.
>>
>>91797682
Well the authors of both articles are trans women so that's probably not a new thing or brought on entirely by WWEO.
>>
>>91798026
... Huh. Well that certainly complicates my interpretation.
>>

>>
>>91788430
was Morrison's run for New 52 ever good? i heard him talking about it on Kevin Smith's podcast and i loved his Batman run.
>>
>>91800417
I believe you're talking about Earth One, which yes, is good.

But keep in mind, it's not just a regular superhero comic. It explores really deep themes of femininity and sex going back to the inception of the character. It's heady even for a Morrison comic.

If you want something a big more traditional, check out Rucka's Year One for Rebirth.
>>
>>91800487
i like all the crazy thematic esoteric bullshit Morrison does and that's what interested me about it when he was talking about it. thanks, i'll check it out.
>>
>>91790909
Problem with her being a mom is she'd be too good at it. Where's the tension? The drama?

Maybe have her and Hippolyta or Phillipus clash on how she's being brought up. Diana wanting her to have a more normal (at least in man's world) life, Phillpus/Hippolyta grooming her to be an Amazon warrior, if not another candidate for Diana's title.
>>
>>91801054
Not really related but on family IIRC Rucka's Year One plot was supposed to involve her having a brother called Jason. Did that ever happen?
>>
>>91801120
Nope, I think some other anon said in the last Rucka thread that that was something they were planning all the way back in 2006 that got abandoned.
>>
>>91801260
It was definitely in the press stuff for Rebirth.
>>
>>91801284
Did some research and yeah, I totally forgot but it was revealed at the end of Darkseid War and was referenced in DCU Rebirth. However so far it hasn't been mentioned or foreshadowed at all in Wonder Woman.

So I dunno what they're gonna do with it. It's probably just a floating point future plotline like the three Jokers and Imra being in Batman.
>>
>>91801472
Also I found an interview where Rucka said that Diana was indeed on Paradise Island for thousands of years, which is different from Perez where she was straight up just 18 years old and grew up normally, and was also the case in New 52 except that other Amazons aged normally and had children too.

I'm assuming that Diana lost her immortality when she left the island and now ages normally? But AFAIK that isn't really explicitly said.

I'm hoping Rucka's last issues have him dumping the new continuity on us so we know what the fuck is happening.
>>
>>91801625
Did you see the supposed "Rebirth" leak from BleedingCool? Here is the Diana part:

As for Wonder Woman and Jonathan Carroll, their respective beaus during the New 52?
Never happened. Lois and Diana are said to be close friends their whole life. Diana delivered Jon. There is the sense that the two Supermans had their lives righted after uniting. The “wrong” history like Convergence or the Diana relationship are gone. They both returned to the other what was missing.

>>91792198
>>
>>91802153
I don't believe that leak at all, but honestly I'd be pretty disappointed if they just retcon it all away, even if I didn't like it.

Can't say I can think of a single good story that actually was about Superman and Diana's relationship and didn't just have it as kind of there. And I bought every single issue of Superman/Wonder Woman. Begrudgingly.

It'd be weird for them to throw it all out considering this page. Why would they even have bothered if they planned to retcon like 90% of the New 52 anyway? It just seems a tad extreme.
