It's not a widespread opinion, but it's not exactly uncommon either. The issues I have:

>Set really far into the past, but slavishly apes the visual aesthetic of the movies without any regard for new designs--and thus introduces the ridiculous "technological plateau" idea into the canon
>Set only decades after Tales of the Jedi, but looks completely distinct in order to accommodate the above point
>Chris Avellone's injection of "muh shades of grey" morality in a retardedly hamhanded way

Those are the main three, but im sure more will come to me.

Nothing directly set in that Era just yet, but we have snippets of what it was like.

>Darth Bane
>The Darksaber
>Ahsoka's Ancient Jedi Outfit & Lightsabers

It's all Samurai-themed, which was one of Lucas's original ideas, before he decided on having the Jedi be more warrior monks.

So basically, based on the only Canon artifacts we have from that Era, we can assume that they are going to take a more eastern-inspired approach to the aesthetics of that Era, whereas I felt KoTOR was WAY too similar to the Prequel/OT aesthetics, to the point where it felt like the Galaxy was stagnant.

And here is Ahsoka's new look, which Filoni explains is after she found ancient Jedi artifacts while tomb raiding an old Jedi Temple.

They could make an entire videogame based on that idea...

But back to my point, note her design, and the hilts of her sabers.

I'm not sure I have any other pictures of the Darksaber, but it also follows the theme.

The Story Group, and Filoni, they all love KoTOR. Hell, look at the newest Rebels clip, those hammerheads are a pretty clear reference if you ask me.

So whenever they decide to tackle that Era, I don't think they'll change too much. Some stuff will be changed, there is no doubt about that at all. But I am sure there will be many callbacks and re-imaginings of the original stories, and I don't doubt for a second that Revan will be made canon too, because Filoni was even considering ways to have him in TCW.

(He and Lucas talked about Bane and Revan showing up on Mortis, but they couldn't do it because it wouldn't make sense. They eventually got Bane in the final episode on Moraband but never got around to including Revan)

Luke was crippled in the Force and the dark side was on steroids, it's canon that Yoda was actually wrong now when he said the dark side wasn't more powerful, it 100% was when he said that line. You can get mad at Disney if you like but it seems Lucas was fine with that since it was part of the prophecy

Rey
-Living in balanced Force spectrum
-BORN after balance was restored
-Sith shrine on Coruscant is dead and can't attack her like it was all Jedi/lightsiders for the last 1,000 years

Again...and again I have tell you people.

Just HOW were they going to show you that balance was restored to the Force? Huh? HM!?

>I, Luke Skywalker sense a great balance in the Force. Mm, so balanced now. No more cheating OP BS from the Dark Side, Rey.

If a scrubby like Kylo can stop a blaster shot what will Luke be capable of?
>>
>>78946648
I hadn't really considered his given that the movie left me with the impression that the Force may not actually be in balance yet, since Snoke has apparently been around for a while and there's another dominant dark side group running around again. Though, I guess the dark side not being as strong as it was could partially explain why trying to feed off of his physical/emotional pain during the duel didn't work out better for Kylo.

Thinking about it now, if the dark side really has been significantly weakened, then in a way, Snoke himself seems like a sort of visual representation of that. He's damaged and weakened, but still out there, guiding the FO and the Knights (specifically Kylo) toward becoming more powerful.

The Premium Crane is ok. If you dont get something good, you can just salvage it, so its never a complete waste of chromium.

But I wouldn't waste your chromium on it early on. Better to max out your storage first. Only spend chromium on the cranes when you have absolutely nothing better to spend it on.

The armory and crew slots are less important, but definitely max out the materials slots. It's probably the most important thing you can spend Chromium on. Everything else is up to you.

If you're willing to spend money on the game, the only one I would recommend is the Long Term Smugglers Contract. It's the cheapest option, and you get daily Chromium for a month. Nothing else comes close in value.

As for drops, the best thing I can recommend is to just level up/upgrade your gear as much as possible, and do the highest difficulty possible on missions. You'll get better drops as time goes on that way.

However, as far as I know, the Story Missions don't really require much more than being a certain level to play them, so if you only care about getting through the story, then you don't have to worry.

That being said, if cosmetics are important, then try collect and upgrade sets of gear for blueprints. You get free chromium for each blueprint you complete, and the option to set the armor cosmetically, without altering your stats/needing to own/equip those pieces of gear.

I hope I explained that well, I haven't slept in god knows how long.
>>
>>78948218
And the reason I say to max the materials slots is because, due to how grind-heavy the game is, you're going to end up running out of storage for materials/desh just by playing. But these are important for upgrading/levelling, so being able to stockpile as much as possible is important. And when you do run out of space, you'll have a lot of shit to sell for money if you need. Happened to me recently, and I sold enough to end up with 2 million credits.

As far as I know, there are no Lightsabers in the game YET. Very late game, there's optional missions where you can go and discover your force sensitivity, but there's no Lightsabers yet.

>>78948526
It's ok. If you don't mind it being too repetitive/grindy, it's essentially just Diablo with a Star Wars skin.

The biggest pros are that it is free, and there's absolutely no content restrictions for non-paying players. The game is canon, and is one of the few things out right now that lets you explore a post-RotJ world. The story is ok, I'm about 45 levels in (the levels are fairly short) and it's starting to pick up pretty fast.

You can emulate it using Bluestacks.

The main con of the game, is the repetativeness. They've improved this in recent updates, adding a LOT more variety to the level layouts, and mission options. But especially later on (Level 40+) you may find yourself needing to grind a little to progress in the story.

A tl;dr on the story;

>you and your sister are trapped in the Anoat Sector after the Empire locks it down
>you do jobs for various Syndicates, first as a generic Mercenary, but later on as a Bounty Hunter while fighting against various criminal gangs, and occasionally Empire forces.

If it sounds interesting to you, give it a shot. Can't hurt to try.

If by Sheev killing all the Rebels you mean next Empire Day Zeb and Ezra conduct a panty raid on his Coruscant palace. Chopper himself dips the sleeping Emperor's hand in a glass of water. When he wakes up he tries to shoot lightning only for the water to short him out, the bolt bouncing off the ceiling and striking Mas Amedda who was asleep in his basket at the foot of Sheev's bed.

Personally, I find that they're tied for bottom of the barrel. TPM has you put up with bad acting and Jar Jar, but gives you the Qui-Gon/Kenobi/Maul fight, while AotC force feeds you bad acting and bad romance, but gives you Dooku.

it's more like watching a documentary. You know what happened, but this is showing you why it happened that way, basically.

I don't blame you for not being able to get into Rebels, it is suffering the early kids series problems these shows always have, but there is some hope from the recent episodes. I also don't blame you for not being able to get into the PT, but that's a whole host of other issues.

I think I'd really prefer more short story collections in the same vein as Before the Awakening.

When I read something like Heir to the Jedi, I find that most of the details are kind of forgettable (I remember Luke moving a noodle with the Force, running through some sewers, and the new girl character getting killed at the end though I can't even remember who did it or why, I assume it was some kind of Imperial agent or bounty hunter searching for the Givin), but I feel like it'd have worked better as three short stories about Luke (one could have been him finding the dead Jedi's lightsaber, another rescuing the Givin, and something else for a third) rather than stretching a thin story over 300 pages.

Even something like Tarkin, which I really enjoyed - it'd have been cool to have three shorter stories about him at different points in his career.

I just think it'd be a better fit for Star Wars since the movies drew a lot from the short stories found in Pulp Fiction magazines. I'm a big fan of writers like Howard, Leiber, and Moorcock.

Is Concord Dawn still part of the same system? Does it even have the same backstory any more? If it is, are Mandolorians anyone in the Mandolor system, or only those peoples that hail from Mandolore itself? Do the people of Concord Dawn refer to themselves as Mandolorians?

It made a shit ton of money but god damn was the story weak. It didn't really need much of a story since it was just a backdrop for dinosaur carnage, but still it was pretty bad. When the "heroes" spend most of the movie arguing against using dinosaurs as weapons and urging respect for them...then they end up using dinosaurs as weapons. And leave a T-Rex and raptor running loose on an island still full of people.

The issue is that their solution to the raptor/rex hybrid ended up releasing a raptor and rex respectively. The movie treats this like a stunning victory with no chances for literally biting someone on the ass. In other words it doesn't matter if it was a "live or die" solution because it ultimately wasn't a solution at all. But hey, it gave us a scene of that woman outrunning a rex in those godawful heels.

TESB and ROTJ both depend a lot on preceding movies, but I think TESB is pretty satisfying taken on its own. It doesn't resolve the plot much, but it has its own mood and its own story to tell. It's thematically satisfying to me. I've always loved the ending.

The funny thing was JJ sounding off on it when it was his own damn fault. Of course they didn't include Rey in the Monopoly set which had figures based around light side/dark side duels. Vader and Luke, Kylo Ren and Finn. Rey being Force sensitive was one of their most obvious plot twists they reveal halfway through the movie, but for some reason he tried to hide the obvious. Of course they used Finn when he was the one with the saber on the posters and in the trailers.

Seems like an arbitrary distinction to me. What difference does it make? Either way it's kept separate from the central story.
>>
>>78960817
I suppose, I just really don't want Star Wars to get tied up in the multiverse/time travel stuff that, in my opinion, muddied up Marvel. In that light, the distinction between "this is just basically fanfiction guys" and "this takes place in Galaxy Far Far Away #2" does matter somewhat
>>
>>78960674

That's the general idea behind them. The last ones were what if this happened instead of this, and what would change. The first one was Luke's torpedo being a dud and yavin getting nuked for example.
>>
>>78960917
>I suppose, I just really don't want Star Wars to get tied up in the multiverse/time travel stuff that, in my opinion, muddied up Marvel
I agree there. But as the old EU has shown us, you don't need multiverse/time travel to muddle things up. So long as they just keep it separate (the same way Legends material and the new stuff is separate) it'd be alright.
>>
>>78960817
I'd love to see the OT re-imagined as if the Prequels happened first in our time, to make the bridge between eras less awkward and very obvious. I know we are all hung up on the whole "Legends is essentially what-if and not canon, so ignore it" thing, but it could still be interesting.

>Is Concord Dawn still part of the same system?

It technically never was. I've seen it on some old maps being near, in Mandalorial controlled space. I think i saw a more recent map that had CD nowhere near Mandalore. But I could be wrong/imagining it since I can't find it.

>or only those peoples that hail from Mandolore itself?

TCW implied that you have to actually be from mandalore (and at least it's moon, Concordia, in the case of Viszla) to be mandalorian.

>Do the people of Concord Dawn refer to themselves as Mandolorians?

Rako Hardeen and Jango Fett didn't.
Honestly, I think these guys are just a group of Mandalorians who are trying to stick it to the Empire much like how the Death Watch tried to stick it to Satine and Dooku, and they just happen to be hiding out on Concord Dawn since Mandalore's too hot.

Two new reference books coming this year.

This one is by Daniel Wallace
>From the Clone Wars and the Rebellion to the clashes with the First Order, the galaxy is defined by war. Star Wars: On the Front Lines chronicles the tactics, weapons, and armor used in pivotal battles along with profiling acts of valor. By focusing on elements of the battles that occurred “off screen,” this collection brings the struggles faced by ground soldiers and starfighter pilots to life like never before and places the reader on the battle lines.

And good ol Pablo's doing this one about Propaganda in the galaxy

>Whether it’s a Star Destroyer hovering over a planet or an X-wing delivering a message of resistance, propaganda images have become synonymous with life in the galaxy far, far away. This in-world art book explores the creation and stories behind these images of power and persuasion—where the images appeared, why particular planets were targeted, and who were the in-world artists behind the works.

The problem is that the air and glass are being sucked backwards like there's an atmosphere instead of just poofing slowly outward or staying in place

But you can't do that sort of stuff in a cartoon cause you need to show momentum and action. Also people would start asking questions like, "Why is the glass just floating there? That's weird. Is that an animation error?"
>>
>>78965072
Like, I even expected some of the Falcon shots on the ground to be full scale models at least but holy shit, not even one. D'Qar maybe, but beyond that? Fucking nothing. And the cockpit ball on the TIE Fighter at the beginning there was fucking CGI. Only the solar panel wings were actually there. For what fucking reason? It was already full scale.

>they just used it at time when it wasn't that good.

For Episode II in very few parts, maybe. They'd mastered their digital craft by Episode III, though.

Yes. That'll definitely be one of the plot-lines tackled by the book. The cover has the Falcon on it, so I assume it'll also look into Han and Chewie liberating Kashyyyk, making some kind of Wookiee life debt situation.

>Speaking about the discomfort she had to endure when wearing her racy slave's costume, she quipped: 'This was no bikini. It was metal. It didn’t go where you went. After the shots, the prop man would have to check me. He’d say, "Okay tits are fine. Let’s go." So I started checking for any bounce or slip after takes.

>'Then it was, "Cut. Hey, how they doin’, hooters in place? Tits all right?" I was embarrassed at first with a hundred guys going crazy over my revealed self. Dignity was out of the question.'

I really hope that the story group shoots down this idea, we already saw it in Lords of the Sith and you can bet that he will try to force his own views on it, but who am i kidding, the story group won't give a fuck and Kathleen Kennedy will just say that the book is very progressive
>>
>>78965337
>Why does Wendig feel the need to cover old ground?
Because it wasn't showing the Empire as the bad guys and persecuting gay people in LotS. The Empire was showing acceptance by being completely indifferent and in doing so it created no drama for people to soap-box on. Wendig will probably change that and make the Empire, a massive intergalactic force that's already evil enough to everyone that doesn't accept their rule in the galaxy, into really petty assholes that for some reason care about what their officers and service-men fuck in the privacy of their quarters(or offices if they're being risky).

Disney puts it in because it is popular, if it wasn't popular then they wouldn't risk it not making profits, if it makes profits it's not something that needs to be championed, since it is already mainstream enough to be absorbed into capitalism.

It was really good to see him portrayed as a legitimate threat. The show seemed to forgot that he was supposed to be a powerful Sith in the earlier seasons, even when they outright called him one.

He's only referenced in Sheev's seduction of Anakin. Ultimate Star Wars only covers character and stuff who've appeared in the films, cartoons and comics. There isn't actually an entry for him or other characters like Rae Sloan or Norra Wexely
>>
>>78970517
Ultimate Star Wars was clearly written very early on.

There's entries for some of the Commander game characters. And there's some tidbits of info from Tarkin/A New Dawn, but they don't really go in depth. Just vague mentions of things like Cynda and Gorse. Oh, and there's a few entries for the Maul comic, but that's it.

I hope we get a follow-up that includes mroe info from the books/comics.

Not that it really changes anything, since "Darth Plagueis" is mentioned separately anyway. The Hego Damask mention is just a quote attributed to him, without anything actually linking him to Darth Plagueis (i.e. there's no "Hego Damask, also known as Darth Plagueis") so anyone who didn't already know who Damask was supposed to be wouldn't be able to tell.

In order to account for inception of design to production to distribution and sale, the people at Hasbro plan toys out a year in advance at LEAST.

Rey product rolling out now while this campaign is happening is a coincidence at best. No way Hasbro can design, manufacture, and distribute this much new Rey product in the span of... how long has the #WheresRey hashtag been in existence? Two weeks?

One that Disney is taking full advantage of and has worked out for them funnily enough. These articles are essentially advertisements whether the people writing them are conscious of it or not.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but the #WheresRey campaign seems like a thinly veiled attempt at Disney trying to advertise via viral social media.

And it's working. Orwell was right.

Not really? The only moments in the show that seems to apply to is when he, Obi-Wan and Anakin get captured, and when Talzin tries to kill him with Old Dakka's DARK MAGICKS

Otherwise, he's portrayed as a pretty solid threat every other time we see him. Sure, he may have come close to losing against Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress, but not before turning Quinlan to the Dark Side in what may have been one of the most brilliant bits of Sheeving we'll never get to see. Also that time he took on Asajj and to or three other Nightsisters virtually blind.
>>
>>78972269
Frankly the entire Nightsisters arc made him look like an idiot

Of course he didn't question her knowledge on the subject, nor her offering him another apprentice, as they've been in-business before.
>>
>>78972330
Katie Lucas tends to write any character not named Ventress very poorly. One of the writing flaws she had in the earlier seasons was the tendency to have characters point out a logical problem or note that something is a bad idea, but have them go along with it anyway. Even Yoda had this when he himself said having Obi-Wan confront Maul alone was a stupid idea that even he didn't agree with but sent him alone anyway (apparently because he read ahead in the script and knew Ventress would show up for the assist)
>>
>>78972491
i thought Obi Wan went off on his own
>>
>>78972673
Nope. Maul sent the message demanding Obi-Wan come along. Everyone knew it was obviously a trap and Mace even said it'd be better to have some clones go for backup but Yoda butts in with some backwards ass "hrrrm against my better judgment this is but alone he must go" nonsense.
>>
>>78972673
He did go on his own to Mandalore, but the first time Maul popped up he demanded Obi-Wan meet him alone, and that was when Yoda agreed to let Obi-Wan do that (despite Yoda himself admitting it was a stupid idea) and shot down Mace Windu's much better idea of sending Obi-Wan plus a battalion of clones.
>>
>>78969444

I think of it like this: Female Exile draws a lot of parallels with Kreia, your mentor. There's a little of it in the game, but in the lore?

Imagine Revan off fighting the True Sith TOR isn't my canon so let's leave it there. He's doing his thing, making sure the galaxy is free from these assholes, when all of a sudden this...BITCH, shows up. She's that stuck up cunt you tried to get wasted back on Malachor, but she didn't die. The one with the Force Bonds? Yeah, her. Oh, and she's Mom's favorite, so there's that. Bitch couldn't get her own master, she had to steal yours? Fuck that.

And to top it off I always imagined the Exile becoming very much a light(er) side Kreia 2.0, so there's the hilarity of Revan being stuck listening to his old master's new favorite, and having Kreia's goddamn voice back in his head because this Exile actually paid attention to her lessons and is now repeating them verbatim back to you.

tl;dr It's hilarious if you imagine the KotOR protagonists and antagonists to be one big dysfunctional family, and I love it.

Soo, this may seem like a bit of a stretch, but has anyone considered the idea of The Son from the Mortis Arc to possibly be Supreme Leader Snoke?
-Snoke has a similar voice.
-Snoke has been around since before the fall of the Republic and rise of the empire.
-The Son has been around conceivably for a long long long time.
-Snoke knew Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker for some time(according to the novelization)
-The Son met and tempted Anakin with the Darkside and saw his future.
-Snoke reportedly comes from the unknown regions of space. Where Sheev sends folks.
-Mortis is in aN Unknown region of space.
-The Son desperately wants to escape.

Now I know Anakin "kills" the Son in the show. But did he? When the father dies he disappears. The Son doesnt. Maybe anakins refusal to stay and bring balance to the force keeps him alive. And maybe Sheets search party into the unknown regions stumbled upon mortis and somehow set him free.

Like I said it's a stretch but I think would be an awesome tie to the clone wars/prequels that's isn't plagieus.

Snoke is most likely a completely new character.

If anything, Kylo Ren might be more comparable to the son while Rey could represent the daughter. I'm sure the balance between the dark and the light side will be a major theme in the ST.
>>
>>78975105
It'd be interesting, I guess, but I think the Son is more of a symbolic representation of the dark side and the role it played throughout Anakin's life rather than an actual being. That seemed to be the entire point of him, so I doubt they'd bring him back in that capacity.

Judging mainly from the way that people like Leia and Han talk about Snoke, I'd think they know quite a bit about him. They drop his name pretty casually and seem well aware that he was responsible for Ben's fall. Maybe that's mostly due to his position, but it seems possible they might've known him themselves at some point before.

The Mandalore sector is in the new canon as it was in the old. Concord Dawn was inside the sector, but not in the same system as Mandalore. It was a colony world for the Mandalorian culture. The details on how Luke's Order fell are very sparse. It's mostly insinuation, frankly, and it's possible, though unlikely, more than a little jumping to conclusions. It's possible the characters themselves don't fully know what happened, or are wrong in their belief of what happened. So far the largest bit of background I'm aware of comes from the Visual Dictionary.

According to the movie Han said it was boy who betrayed Luke and the Order. According to the script it was on Starkiller Base when Han first saw his son as a man. So a BOY murdered every single Jedi and drove Luke into Exile? Even Vader took the 501st with him. There's definitely more to this story than we've been told, well obviously there is. For myself I suspect there's going to be some huge "twist" in the works, something they'll try on par with "Luke, I am your father."

No clue what that is, but I wonder if maybe Ben wasn't actually the betrayer he's been labeled as. Maybe he wasn't the killer at Luke's Jedi temple, maybe he was one of the spoils taken. The young grandson of Darth Vader would be a prize, and if Kylo Ren's power to invade minds turns out to be nothing compared to Snoke's it is possible Ben is just another victim brainwashed into believing he's really Kylo Ren. A Dark Side Patty Hearst.

Just speculating, of course, which is next to worthless. Still I'm willing to bet there is a much deeper story behind everything than we're lead to believe, and we have two more movies to reveal it.

Seems like they don't consider it as requiring much to know how to use a sword, according to the blurb in the lower right corner. Since the Visual Dictionary was produced before the movie came out it seems they anticipated this complaint.

Doesn't mean people will accept it as an explanation, which they haven't, but this is the in-universe reason they've stated.

I disagree with her being a Mary Sue character.
She is a Hero character. She has the characteristics of a Hero character. And the Force can explain most of that.
I go by the definition that a Mary Sue is a character who has abilities they should not have.

The things that could make her a Mary Sue would not be her fighting abilities, her mechanic abilities, her force abilities. It would be her ability to talk to droids and Wookiees.

Why the fuck can she talk to droids and Wookiees? Only a Mary Sue would do that. She is good looking because she is an actress and this is a big budget movie. That is not an issue.
It may be revealed that she has learned droid talk from doing mechanic work, which that could then make sense because that is her back story.

But her understanding Wookiees? Come on. Are we going to be told that in her back story she knew Wookiees? This is the real fuck up. You don't find Wookiees all over the place.
Now if the limit of her language is just wookies and droids. And somehow she is related to Luke or Han. I will allow it. But man they are fucking pushing it.

Filoni was disappointed with it too in the end. In the process to veer away from Godzilla's look, it lost the "Human in a costume" silhouette that he finds to be key to a kaiju's appeal.

That's the most nominations a Star Wars film has received since the first one. Fans can nitpick as much as they want, TFA is a very well crafted movie.

>>
>>78979568
True, you cannot use the lack of an acknowledgement as evidence of it being poorly written. In the same way you cannot use the lack of a condemnation as evidence that it is well written.

All it means is other things were better or worse, it says nothing specific to of the quality of the work unless it is directly compared to those other works.
>>
What's even better than the five oscar nominations is the fact that TFA wasn't nominated for a golden raspberry award.
TPM received 7 nominations, including worst picture and won worst supporting actor for Ahmed Best as Jar Jar. AOTC received 7 nominations, including worst picture and won both worst screenplay and worst supporting actor for Hayden Christensen. And ROTS received one nomination and won worst supporting actor for Hayden again.

So TFA literally redeemed the Star Wars franchise.

That bit titled "An Awakening" is really odd given the movie doesn't make any of that clear despite them doing the whole "There has been an awakening" bit. There was nothing to suggest it wasn't just Rey but the whole damn Force was waking up.

I mean what the hell is going on? The Force wasn't said to have retreated after the death of the old Jedi Order or during the reign of the Emperor but this makes it sound like even if children are being born with the Force or people who can use it have had their connection "weakened" although they still have their powers. Why did the Force suddenly take a nap and why did it wake up when Rey found the Skywalker family sword?

Seems like people will claim she's even more of a mary sue since she woke up the whole damn Force, but really her name is Rey, Spanish for King, and she pulled a sword from a stone castle (of all places). She's another in-universe Chosen One in another approximation of Arthurian (as well as many other) legends. Apparently the Force, when she accepted it, protected her at Starkiller Base. As the Deus Ex master of Destiny the Force obviously led her to Maz through it's usual roundabout manipulation of events. In that case, though, it also protected Kylo Ren. When he was finally defeated the two were separated by the very ground itself opening up and moving them apart as the Base began to self-destruct.

Alright, fellas. As far as contemporary /co/ related SW material goes I've been following Darth Vader since launch and I only just recently finished watching the whole TCW on Netflix.

Are any of the other recent comics (read: since Legends became a thing, I've read plenty of classical EU comics) worth reading and is Rebels at the very least 60-70% as good as TCW? Might even settle for 50.

>Luke Skywalker has vanished.
>In his absence, the sinister
>FIRST ORDER has risen from
>the ashes of the Empire
>and will not rest until
>Skywalker, the last Jedi,
>has been destroyed.

>With the support of the
>REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa
>leads a brave RESISTANCE.
>She is desperate to find her
>brother Luke and gain his
>help in restoring peace
>and justice to the galaxy.

>Leia has sent her most daring
>pilot on a secret mission
>to Jakku, where an old ally
>has discovered a clue to
>Luke's whereabouts....

So according to the opening crawl, Hux, AND the resistance leaders the Republic was their primary sponsor and backup. Only the visual dictionary, thus far, is saying it was all Leia and the Republic couldn't care less.

What is the deal, here? Did they change their minds too late for the dictionary to be corrected?

As far as I know, there's been no definitive timeframe given as far as when Luke's Jedi were destroyed, which means Ben could easily have been 20 or possibly older when it happened (given he was born very shortly after Endor apparently). I also doubt much actual brain-washing was necessary on Snoke's part in turning him, given the implication that sending Ben away to Luke in the first place (especially if it was because of Snoke plaguing his mind) played a part in his fall. Might've felt like his parents just didn't want to deal with him and his problem, and just passed him off to someone else.

Whether or not Ben actually killed all those Jedi himself is kinda questionable, especially considering he's obviously no master combatant yet, but it's possible. Going back to WHY he might've done it, though, it seems possible with what we know that he just felt alienated from most people due to whatever he was dealing with, and found someone more accepting in Snoke. It could be that he actually came to see Snoke as some kind of fatherly figure eventually, and that this was why killing Han was the big test for him - it was a matter of choosing Snoke to be that figure in his life and severing another link to who he was before.
>>
>>78979746
It's possible than Han merely hadn't seen been for years after sending him to Luke, although that does seem odd. Like they cut all contact with their own son even before he went Vader Jr.
>>
>>78979682
Don't be delusional. The prequels have always been ridiculed, both from fans and critics. You might have a different opinion, but it doesn't change the fact that TFA got overwhelmingly positive reviews and critical acclaim and the prequels didn't.
>>
>>78979718
Leia organised the Resistance herself, and the Resistance gets backing from some senators, the majority and current chancellor are too interested in themselves and other matters.
So the Republic at large probably either doesn't care or doesn't know enough about the situation, but there are outliers and underground supporters.
>>
>You know a character is doomed by canon but still keep watching

Is there a more tragic character in the canon than Fives
>>
>>78979834
Han Solo maybe? He got frozen in carbonite, his son murdered the students of his best friend and in the end Han was also killed by his son.
>>
>>78979718
>What is the deal, here?
Most of the New Republic political arm didn't care much for Leia and saw her, not as a leader, but as an aggressor looking to keep up the fight, and disliked her. A few in the Republic helped her, but most were just corrupt politicians mired in their own self-interests.

Hopefully Episode Eight goes a little into that story. Makes sense, the NR is crippled and they need a leader in this trying time.
>>
>>78979834
>Is there a more tragic character in the canon

Luke? If only for the fact that in thirty years the kid with so much hope and had the drive to bring back peace to the Galaxy and a new Jedi Order lost everything he held dear and has hidden away in the far reaches of space in exile.

That really hurts.

>>78979834
Obi-wan's:
>Master died
>Best friend and student died and became the scourge of the galaxy
>Best friend was pretty awful at the beginning and end of the Clone Wars though but you had to keep him anyway
>Girlfriend died (killed by his nemesis who also killed his master)
>Got shot down by one of his best clone bros
>Watched his student kill younglings
>Had to break the news to student's pregnant wife
>Watched pretty much his entire life be destroyed and warped under the Empire
>Got stuck on a sand planet and aged like blue milk left out in the double suns for two decades
Pre-ANH Obi-wan is suffering.
I'm sure I'm missing quite a lot, even.
>>
>>78979907
I'm pretty sure I heard some rumor about Del Toro being cast as a politician looking to profit off the war or something like that in Ep. 8. If that's true, there might be something interesting in it if he ends up being the Resistance's primary backer or something, just for his own ulterior motives.
>>
>>78979953
>>78979890
You know, it does really put a damper on the ending to Jedi...
>>
>>78979953
Han and Leia have suffered much more. It was their own child who ruined their lives.
>>
>>78979979
In fact, now I think about it, the only Star Wars character who hasn't really suffered is Sheev

>Gets to be Chancellor
>Manages to manipulate an entire war to bring down his hated enemies
>Becomes supreme ruler of the Galaxy
>Destruction of first Death Star is merely a speedbump
>Dies fairly painlessly by being thrown down a space mine shaft

Heck he was ancient anyway at that point, and it's not like he suffered any tragic loss...
>>
>>78979979
Not really. They had a relatively peaceful time until Snoke appeared. It lasted longer than in the old EU at least.
>>
>>78979811
You're new is showing. The Prequels weren't universally panned when they came out, the hate train actually built up steam over the last decade. Ebert, for instance, gave Phantom Menace three and a half out of four stars. They had their own accolades, nominations and awards won. Jack Lloyd even won a Young Artist Award.
>>
>>78980034
Plus, given the fact that he pretty much let the moffs and governors run the Empire for him (at least I think that was the case) he basically had all that time up till RotJ to fuck around and do whatever.
>>
>>78979812
Could be argued that individual worlds support her. Ackbar's presence may indicate this. At the very least after the Republic was reorganized so individual worlds can have their own defense forces, I can't imagine, for instance, that the Mon Cal sent all their ships to the Hosnian System. For what purpose? Also surely they still have other noted shipyard worlds like Corellia.

It's a situation the movie really simplified/glossed over that needs some TLC.
>>
>>78979998
>Luke
>Leia
>Han
They all suffered, it's not really a game of who lost more because they all just lost.

>>78980074
>It lasted longer than in the old EU at least.
How long did the NR in the EU last?
In this time the New Republic must have went to sith in the first ten years after the golden age of it's existence to have become the shit hole it was in TFA.
>>
>>78980215
I hope you aren't complaining about there being "too much conflict" in the sequel trilogy now. Drama and conflict are necessary in every movie, especially in a franchise that's literally called "Star Wars".
>>
>>78980166
Ackbar was a general, first and foremost, and with the galaxy at relative peace, he could've retired.
But like many military figures in the Rebellion they knew the Empire wasn't quite dead enough, so they rallied behind Leia and formed the Resistance.
I would suppose there are many other military forces working to help the Resistance, but not many senators necessarily.

I'm less certain about this but I think the New Republic had their own fleet specifically for the senate and the like, outside of planetary fleets. There's a lot of talk about how demilitarized they are, and how their fleet is even smaller than the First Orders'. I would imagine that doesn't actually include every operating fleet that works within the New Republic, just the dedicated NR one.
>>
>>78980401
>"too much conflict" in the sequel trilogy now
No, I'm just wondering how in the hell the NR got so bad in such a short time. In less than thirty years they deteriorated faster than the Old Republic did, It took at least several hundred years for the Old Republic to fall. Then again the New Republic probably never even got all that great to begin with. How long were they fighting the Empire after Endor, two or three years? Plus, I bet Reconstruction was a bitch.
>>
>>78980074
Snoke had been around ever since the Empire fell, though. He was manipulating Ben from the moment he was born, which by everyone's best guess is some short time after the Battle of Jakku.
>>
>>78980616
They were fighting the Empire for just one year and a couple months after Endor. The NR didn't have Jedi peacekeepers available to them either, which could possibly be why it fell so much quicker than the old Republic. It's always much harder to start a new time record for something to exist after it's previous form was destroyed after such a long time. Like trying to get another high score in a video game after just losing your best run; it almost never happens.
>>
>>78980616
You basically answered your own question. You can't expect them to build a stable government with no help in such a short amount of time. Compare it to the interwar period in the Weimar Republic and Austria directly after the first world war. People were poor, desperate and regularly beat each other up on the streets for their political beliefs. Then during the great depression, the nazis came to power.
I think the war in the sequel trilogy is much more comparable to the second world war than the old galactic civil war was.

Some of these are legit critiques, some are explained in the background material (like Finn's upbringing). Some appear to be misinterpretations or misunderstandings of parts of the movie. And then there's the common complaint about Rey being as good as Luke when frankly she never even showed Force Jump, the most basic of Jedi skills which would have allowed her to cross the fissure in the land and finish off Ren - if she chose.
