Nah, if you want to color it, color it. Fun doesn't usually have a required entry level of skill. You can also achieve a lot by only using flat color without shading on a multiply layer, and later adding a color layer (around 10-15% opacity) to unify the palette.

Well, I tried. I don't think my abilities are really good enough for your amazing art, but maybe someone here will like it. The pants were the most difficult part, and they never did turn out the way I wanted but I surprised myself by being able to do this much with them.
