I'm surprised with the low amount of yaoi (besides all those fanarts of Goro) that Persona 5 has gotten so far. I remember when Persona 4 came out, there were tons of fanarts, and the Japanese fans kept drawing a lot even after the English version version was released.

P5 was so disappointing. Most of the characters feel like boring retreads and redone tropes that Atlus has already used before.

Understandable, but still, it's a step back, considering P2 had a gay option, and Kanji from P4 was an ambiguous case. From Yusuke's appearance, mannerism and some of his dialogue options I feel like he was intended to be a gay option at first, but it was scraped the last moment. His platonic crush on Ann also looks added lately, he doesn't even look at her in most of animated cut-scenes.

It's even worse because the only gay and trans characters in the game are hideous comic reliefs without portraits. I'm surprised tumblr didn't lose their shit about these clowns, even by Japan comedy standarts, they are insulting.

But Persona 2, which came out in the '90s, had a gay main character. But since then, it's like Atlus has been actively trying to "no homo" itself with every new Persona game. You know, I've heard so many people ask this, it's kind of annoying. I mean what kind of answer are people expecting? There's some malevolent force corrupting Atlus? I dunno, I don't think things move in a given direction all the time, and the idea that "it's current year" or whatever is not compelling to me.

People also have to understand that despite being in the same franchise, modern Persona (3-5) and classic Persona (1 & 2) have almost nothing in common. People are always complaining that newcomers to the series have never played the original games. But why would I? I play Persona because I like the anime characters, the social link stuff, etc. On the other hand, it seems like while the older Persona games have good stories, even huge fans of the classic games say the gameplay can be a huge slog.

What I'm trying to say that Persona has transformed from a niche RPG franchise to a hugely successful RPG franchise highly influenced by anime and otaku culture. So what worked for the first two Personas definitely have no bearing on the future of the series.

In terms of homolust, I think modern Persona games have gone up and down. 3 had no homolust to me at all. (Maybe people will bring up Shinji and Akihiko, but meh, I'm not really seeing it, and any that's there is not very intentional) 4 has the cut Yosuke romance option, and then Atlus added Adachi stuff as time went on to bait fujos. There was also Kanji, but I guess his situation was resolved very differently than when I first thought when I met him. 5 again has little, but I think one of the big events in a story is driven by fujobait (which I think is upsetting to people who aren't fans of how it was handled). There was also Lala, which I think is a fair representation of a LGBT character. Finally, I've never watched the movie series for 3, but apparently they ramped up the relationship between Ryoji and Makoto which was pretty lacking before.

The real answer is probably a combination of factors - the more mainstream aspect of the series, the greater appeal to otaku, Atlus's monetary woes, Hashino's (?) preferences/homophobia, and then decisions of whoever else is creatively involved in the game (like whoever floated the idea of a Yosuke romance link). There's always tons of stuff behind the scenes we'll never be able to see.

Also are you the anon who was bringing up how Nier had a gay character? You know that different people in Japan have different values.

Atlus doesn't care what we think, so don't expect anything to change anytime soon.

5 is definitely the easiest game to max out. I made some mistakes, but I manage to max out everyone but four confidants. Maybe you already know this, but if you max out Kawakami then you can get a massage and go out. I wasn't able to max out Haru though. Putting her behind 5 proficiency was a bad idea.
