It's never actually stated in game, but the series producer said in an interview that the main protag is in a relationship with his best male friend. Now, I haven't beaten the game completely, but from what I can remember, it's all mostly implied. There are skits where he doesn't understand why a certain male party member is obsessed with women's bodies and such. It's played in a way that implies he's "too pure" for such thoughts, but it really sounds like he just doesn't get excited about women parts. Also, there are no female love interests for him to interact with. There's also a part in the beginning where one character repeatedly remarks at how close the two are and it seemed like a "let's milk the shippers" thing until I read about the interview. That's probably all they could get put in.

It's actually more implied in the Nip version than the English version.
There's actually a skit in the game where Sorey is asked to look at "babes" (literally beauties in the Nip version) and Sorey's first thought was to look at MIkleo. Then there's the skit when Sorey claims to be in love with someone, but the head scriptwriter made it clear that it's neither Alisha, Rose or any other female. And the only other person in the skit besides the one posing the question is Mikleo, so by the process of elimination, it has to be Mikleo who Sorey's in love with.

Some people are just dumb or willfully blind. I've seen some people vehemently protest at such a suggestion and I'm like woah, how do you even make it to the end of a video game besides COD if you can't even pick up on a hint? And this one is pretty glaring.

Everyone here probably thinks Destiel is canon, too. It's a queerbait of the Yuri on Ice type that's been out recently where it's very cleverly written on a "main" audience level with little crumbs for fujoshi to squeal over, but each "gay implication" is plausibly deniable if you push it. Writing that way's really an art form but Japan's been perfecting it lately, probably because it gets a lot of money from poor suckers on Tumblr. Don't get me wrong, I love SorMik, but I know when I'm being targeted as a member of the slash-shipping demographic.

Ignoring interviews and twitter, where writers can dial the queerbait up to 11 because the normal audience isn't listening anymore, the best evidence we have in the game is Mikleo's titles (which are pretty gay, but also read as reflecting how he was raised alongside Sorey since they were kids) and the sauna skits, where Sorey and Mikleo entirely ignore the usual peek-on-the-girls plotline to have an academic conversation about the history of saunas, and another one when Sorey immediately looks at Mikleo when told by Zaveid to "hunt for babes", which is played for laughs.

That said, Sorey definitely does not come off as straight or interested in girls in any way. He is either gay or asexual. You could argue "too pure to understand liking girls" since he is thematically pure, but that... kind of stops flying when he has a CG where he and Rose fall asleep on each other's shoulders and it doesn't come off as anything other than friendship. He and Rose are bros, end of story, no other interpretation, which is what makes him and Mikleo look so much more "canon" by comparison.

It exists when an anime deliberately sets out to get and sell merchandise to a fujo audience, which is what Free does. Even hetero anime will do it with characters they know fujoshi like, like Shinji/Kaworu from Eva. It exists more in anime because anime creators know about shipping and yaoi and know they can use it to sell products, it's simply a fact. Whether or not you use the term queerbaiting, the fact that anime and western shows will give fanservice for certain characters and relationships without intent to follow through in order to make more money is not in dispute; coining the term queerbaiting is an attempt to show how it could be seen as harmful.

For example, there were plenty of people watching Yuri on Ice who didn't expect the main pairing to become canon, despite the characters flirting and hinting at interest. They didn't know the creators intended to follow through on it, but shipped it anyway. It's because that romance didn't look all that different from many other relationships in anime and manga.

I'm not arguing that it's harmful, I'm arguing that it exists and that can be done deliberately. Queerbaiting and fanservice for fujoshi (or for yuri fans as well) are basically the same thing. Your original point was that queerbaiting was just bad writing, and while I agree with the fact that it's bad writing/storytelling, it's also definitely more than that. These anime don't accidentally make male/female characters flirt with their same gender by accident. They know they'll get yaoi/yuri fans out of it even if they never follow through. Whether you like the term or not, the concept of queerbaiting definitely exists.

Again, I don't think it's as harmful as tumblr would make you believe. But am I also absolutely fucking sick of it? Yes. Do I want these stories to just follow through if they drop a million fucking fanservicey hints for it? Yes. Mainly because I'm really fucking bored of getting jerked around. Well since a lot of people like to pretend that "queers" don't exist, queerbating to the extent of playing the intimacy off as a joke is just one more way of appeasing "straight" guys who are afraid of male intimacy of any sort and like to laugh it off and look at it as disgusting and something they can ignore on one end, or outright destroy on the other. In that way yes, it can be harmful if it becomes so widespread, which it kinda is.

But really guys, the "fanservice" for fujos in anime is WAY different than the queerbating done on American TV. Anime with gay-ish guys and girls are aimed at straight people, whereas gay-ish people in American/British media are more heavily aimed at "queer" people for them to explicitly buy into the show's crap.

I disagree with this part. It's queerbaiting when there's still evidence to suggest that both characters are straight and you wouldn't need to use any mental gymnastics to believe they're straight. At least to me, queerbaiting is just fanservice. If they lead me into believing two characters might be gay for eachother only to pull a bait-and-switch then it ruins the entire experience and becomes poor writing.

The problem I have when people call something queerbaiting is that they lump all the serious moments together with all the "looks gay out-of-context" moment. I have no problem believing SorMik is canon because that's what the story wants me to think. If hypothetically, it was never confirmed that they were canon and the two end up dating girls in the end, I should have every right to feel betrayed and nobody should say "well what did you expect? It was just queerbaiting".

I'd agree with that. Most of my point was just that what most people tend to call queerbaiting I would simply call canon gay, because there's no need for extraneous proof. It's perfectly alright to hint at a romance and give characters a bit of chemistry without some big love confession at the end, while still staying perfectly canon. Kurama and Hiei would be a pretty good example of a confirmed couple that didn't get much on screen exposure for their relationship, but was still nice all the same. I do think it's pretty repugnant when authors shoehorn in a straight romance right at the end though, which is what I meant by that being the only true queerbait. It's a betrayal of the audience's trust and honestly completely ruins the entire series any time it happens.

totally agree with this. i dont understand why they throw in random straight pairings at the end of certain series even when its unrealistic af or they showed no interest in each other through the entire series. its like they decide to take a massive dump on the series and it ruins it for everyone, every single time.
