When you lose your ego properly you don't disappear. You merge with the other entity and both exist together. Imagine yourself when you were 10 years old, is it you? Because your 10 years old self is very different but you consider yourself the same person. This happens because everyday you come back to your body after you sleep and you keep going forward and that little feeling of "I think therefore I am" still exists when you wake up. Losing your ego and merging with an other entity is keeping your Descartes feeling but becoming someone else.
