The spanish even described encounters when they landed in the new world. For example at the siege of Tenochtitlan there was supposedly a giant defending the city for the Aztecs.

If you think about it, is it really out of the question that there'd be a human subspecies that was naturally gigantic, within the limits of what the skeleton can support? Even regular humans can have gigantism.
