Wrong. Meteorite indeed devastated a lot of life but much of it slowly died over time as climate was drasticalyl changed. Nowadays, people consider change of oxygen levels as a huge factor. In very oxygen-rich (by comparison) atmosphere of the past huge creatures could live but they were too big to survive as level of oxygen changed. Then natural selection took over, with smaller specimen having higher chance to survive and evolve over generations.
