pic related, and this might be long, sorry about that.
my friend has owned this mysterious thing for about 5 years now after his dad purchased it from a man in a bar. the man claims his dad made "joking joey" before he passed away, and the father voiced it himself.
my friend has never questioned it and while he finds it weird and mysterious, it's never really been an issue or something for him to look into further. a couple of other friends and I have decided to research and have found out a couple interesting things:
> a search for joking joey on the internet returns nothing, except for a single youtube video which shows the puppet in action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abv3HqhmVLQ)
> this puppet shown in the video appears to be in a different box to the one owned by my friend, and the puppet we have is wearing different clothes and the scenery has been rearranged, which is told by marks on the inside of the box like things have been ripped up and moved. (could easily just be a reboxing issue, but that brings the question of why he's been reboxed)
> a look into "wwwbigboystoyscom"'s channel shows a video entitled "on the news", so we watched it and figured out the man "Martin Fillery" is definitely connected to joking joey in some way or another, if he is the owner of wwwbigboystoyscom
> after attempting to reach out to Martin on facebook and my messages not going through at all, I decided to google him and discovered that as of August 2017, he has been imprisoned for running a underground cannabis facility in a nuclear bunker involving slave labour.

Found some information here:
Martin Fillery is a big collector of toys. His collection includes a life sized hulk and a TARDIS. Recently though Martin has started having a relationship and his new girlfriend has asked that he get rid of a few pieces of his collection, specifically his replica AT-ST model (which is to scale) from Return of the Jedi. Martin has not completely given up his collecting as he plans to use the funds from the sale to purchase more toys.

So I would say the story you had is probably the truth. Unless you can provide more pictures of the box showing serial numbers or signs of mass production what likely happen was. Your friends dad met a man in a bar who's father built and voiced joking joey before he died. At least two machines were built and the other machine was bought by a toy collector named Martin Fillery who happen to fund his toy collection hobby though a drug slavery ring. Either that or Martin Fillery was the man your friends father met in that bar who sold him the machine. Either way, it seems like since this was never mass produced and there wouldn't be much to research. Perhaps once Martin Fillery has finished his 18 year sentence in 2035 he can shed more light on it. But besides that I don't see what more can be researched.
