my dad put a tip in about the gilgo beach killer on long island a few years back but it never lead to anything. police were speculating it was a former cop who was committing the murders and my dad being a retired cop put an anonymous tip about a cop he used to work with who used to joke about killing hookers and stuff, regularly, for years. so much so that he was known as the weird cop who jokes about killing hookers

There are always active serial killers. Generally speaking, kind of like >>19547104, most of them kill hookers or illegal immigrants so nobody really cares or investigates what they do. If they are caught it doesn't make the news too much because nobody really cares about some rando who killed a handful of prostitutes. Besides, spree shooters are the ones who get all the attention now.

Good points, it seems to be that the media just covers either the most brash killings or maybe if your in with Alex Jones's line of thought only what can help push their adgenda.
