It seemed like there were some truly unexplained instances at first, then many copycats to follow. The majority once it blew up were just edgelords, but at first there were some unexplained cases. As in clowns just showing up miles into the wilderness with nothing else around, almost as if they were natrually part of the environment. Any edgelord wouldn't go deep into a woods on a remote trail, knowing the chances of running into someone was slim. my personal take on this was that it might have started as an elaborated marketing campaign for the upcoming IT remake, they might have intended to just create enough social steam but it went south too quick so they never got to even reveal the fucking marketing gig, kinda like "fuck, a ton of autists are doing this and its getting out of hand, lets abort this shit"
