Hey /x/. I'm not usually on this board, but you guys seemed the best to ask about this.
I'm currently in the process of writing a screenplay for a short film, and I'm stuck trying to find the right mythical creature to fit a role.

What are some female mythical creatures that are more or less neutral / good? Something that's humanoid and is native to wooded / forest areas. The origin can honestly be from any folklore / region. I've been doing a lot of research but it's hard to narrow down results to those specifications.

The closest thing I could find to what I'm looking for so far is a Hulder / Huldra. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulder). What are some other creatures that fit this role? And what do you know about them? If need be, I can be more specific about what roles I'd need the creature in. I'll be lurking to answer questions / talk!

Well, you've got your Nymph, Naiad, Dryad, and Sylph, plus various kinds of female fae. The usual advice is warranted: these weren't intended as DnD races, they're pretty much all uniques and individuals. A personification of some element or aspect, a bend in a river or a particular elm tree, perhaps, and one day it just woke up and started walking around for reasons. These same myths tend to have humanity being formed from a lump of clay, or a bit of spit or blood from a god. Think in those sorts of terms.
>>
>>19534435
Very interesting. I'll definitely add these to the list of creatures to research and learn about!
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but what you're saying is that most of these creatures you mentioned inhabit some kind of spiritual nature, in that they weren't always interpreted as a being in a physical form? So like you said, in myths having humanity being formed from clay, some of these creatures could've simply once been a part of their respective origins? (i.e. a tree in the forest, essence from a swamp, lake, etc?)

Thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated!
>>
What is the film about? Is it porn? It must be porn.

So, a succubus, Nymph, Sylph, Dryad, Lich and Witch would fit your porn setting.

Monster Girl Encyclopedia has a lot of other monster girls, you could look for more ideas and designs there.

It's a little more like the spirit of the object manifested itself as a physical being separate from the object, but connected to it. The Greeks and Romans didn't have much of a problem with the idea of an abstract embodying. That's pretty much their pantheon. Well, this is a smaller-scale version. The god of this hill or that stream. And you, in this set-up, are the god of yourself.

>>19534615
>Monster Girl Encyclopedia
Completely slipped my mind. On a related note, unless OP is going strictly humanoid, Monmusume beat him there.
>>
Look up Lorelei, Undine, and Selkie as well.
>>
>>19534615
lmao it's not a porn, no!
Although that does give me an idea... anyway,
I'll look those up too.

As for the film, the character role that the creature, or "monster girl", takes is a creature near a small town that is believed to be the cause of a missing child, but turns out she's completely innocent in the matter and it's another, much more dangerous being that everyone is completely oblivious to. The monster girl is basically gonna play a key role in letting our protagonist (a witcher-esque monster hunter) know what's going on.

>>19534639
I've actually run into her while researching other creatures. I'm trying to avoid name-specific creatures just for the sake of continuity.

>>19534744
That's a really interesting take on the concept. I'm really glad I consulted you guys before I actually tried to make a definitive choice in this stuff. But that makes perfect sense-- It's like the spirit / god of that thing manifesting inside an earthly body for the sake of communication / presence.

>>19534748
Going on the list. Thanks, anon!
>>
>>19534777
A Lich works then, they are basically a necromancer that revived herself, MGE's Lich is really cute.

It wouldn't be far-fetched that one was hiding in a forest/cave, the townsfolk knew about and feared her, she was lonely with her eternal life but too shy to interact with humans because she is basically an undead, since Liches are powerful wizards, they must have information.
>>
>>19534827
Look at you, Mr. writer. Making a Lich a priority, then.
What about creatures that are more good than neutral? Ones that would want to help instead of stand idly by? In the script, the protagonist is injured and we were hoping to have the same creature help him recover. Any of these creatures fit the role or are we starting to get too imaginative? It's not set in stone so things are definitely changeable, but it would be ideal to have her save his life. Thoughts / ideas?
>>
>>19535001
>Writer
Nah, I just play a lot of eroges.

I can't think of a single creature that would actively help humans and decide to life away from them. Angels, Sylph and any plant-monster would be able to heal, but if you only want his life to be saved, they could kill whatever was trying to kill him.
>>
>>19535719
Alright cool. Thanks for the info!

If there's anything else you want to add to this let me know. I'm entirely open to new information / ideas.
>>
>>19537093
I don't really know the story and I would hate to be an ideasguy, it is your film so have fun!

MGQ has a kind of Lich, I like her background because she died trying to save her sister, then used necromancer magic to revive herself, she was confused whenever she was still herself or just a corpse she revived.
>>
>>19534435
Dont forget the Yakshini
>>
>>19537837
No I'm all for creative ideas / constructive criticism! That's what I came here for lol.
Is the Lich a general creature or is it a one-of-a-kind character?

>>19538563
Ooooh Budhist mythology. At the very least, I'll consider the story behind it when writing my own!
>>
>>19538598
Anyone that can use magic may become a Lich, but something something black magic.
>>
>>19538939
So I guess that goes more into the "necromancer / witch" category instead of the creature / monster category.
Still interesting. Thanks for the input!
>>
>>19534777
Checked.
>for the sake of communication / presence
I think of it more like a scale of being-ness. Amp the mana level of something some and it becomes special, amp it enough that it goes sentient and that comes with a humanoid shape. If you haven't seen Spirited Away, this is the time to do so. It may inform your task.

>play a key role
The Donor. As a magical being, she may be able to lend the hero a weapon / power that will allow him to engage with the actual baddie.

You may be familiar with this already, but if not:

>>
>>19539467
Funny enough, if you're the original anon who brought up the topic about them taking the form of living beings, that actually crossed my mind. The first thought that came to mind was "just like the spirit of the river from Spirited Away" but I didn't want to sound autistic.

And I had a feeling that you were gonna link something like that. I've seen it before at one point, but I'll give it another look. Honestly I'm pretty comfortable with my writing / directing talent, but I love to learn about what I'm writing to avoid making something half baked.
>>
>>19534082
Angels?
>>
>>19540017
See that's the obvious choice, but I'm looking for something that isn't cliche / expected. Something really cool about the original Witcher series, for example, is that a lot of the creatures and monsters the protagonist would come across, the reader would have no prior knowledge about. Everyone knows what an angel is, even if you aren't religious. But if you saw our hero come face to face with some unknown being, it becomes significantly more interesting, because unless you're some huge mythical creature fanatic, you don't know what it's moral compass, intentions, or personal agenda is.

So angel is the ideal choice for a good entity, but we aren't looking for ideal. We're looking for something lesser known and unique.

What about a Glaistig?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaistig
>>
>>19540081
Another option, although there are a bunch of different interpretations of the Glaistig. A lot of them have her luring people into the woods to drink their blood and all that jazz. But I do see how the whole protection over farmers thing could come into play.

Another creature I'll write down and remember. Thanks for the contribution, anon!

1.Seelie- an irish fae, definitely neutral/good (as the unseelie are typically the "bad") they have independent magickal abilities all used in combination to make strong "family" units.
2.Furie- typically a fire fae, however, some people like to say they live deep in the woods.
3. Undine - even though it is classified as a water spirit, it lives in creeks, lakes, streams and helps those who have become lost in the woods.
4. Druid/Tuatha De Danann - although independent of each other, their folklores are basically intertwined as the TDD are the mythological creatures and the Druids are the human/hybrid equivalent of the TDD.

All good options that border on neutral/good or neutral/bad depending. Good luck!
>>
>>19542461
Thank you so much anon!
>>
>>19542472
No problem! I write short stories and it's always interesting what creatures you can come up with. You could (depending on where you want the story line to go/start with) have the mythical creature be a "hybrid" if you like a creature that is typically on the "bad" side. Give it human qualities and boom- good/neutral- well, towards humans anyway.
>>
>>19542539
Right! I've never done a film about anything mythical / fantasy-based. I don't know the specifications about applying your own twist on set-in-stone creatures, you know? I want to stay as close to home canonically with these beings, but of course I'll add my own twist / storyline / personality.
>>
>>19542670
Makes sense! Either way, this is a really great way to learn about them!
>>
Check out some slavic mithology, they have a lot of woodland cratures being able to ransform into women etc. Sirin is a mythological creature of Russian legends, with the head and chest of a beautiful woman and the body of a bird. According to myth, the Sirins lived "in Indian lands" near Eden or around the Euphrates River.
>>
>>19542872
I'll look into it. I'm not familiar with Slavic legends, so that's a good sign. I get to learn something new and maybe it will bring some uniqueness to the script. Thanks anon!

Not to try and force my ideas on your work OP but if you want to go non specific for your script then researching "local"spirit myths and tropes may be what your looking for. Something like an old legend passed down around townspeople like a Guardian Spirit. For example like imagine the child goes missing in a local forest and your Witcher encounters legends of a Forest Spirit who has protected the forest since time immemorial. She's an object of reverence because while she isn't inherently malicious, she doesn't take kindly to people harming her home. So it puts her firmly in the middle of an alignment spectrum because she's only looking out for what she cares about. So the Witcher makes the conclusion the boy may have gotten on the Forest Spirit's bad side and bada bing bada boom you have conflict.

It also frees up your hand for her powers and appearance because you aren't bound by existing mythology and folklore. And you can have whatever design elements you want for a non descript Forest Spirit. Like in Pokemon (pardon my autism) Celebi is a Guardian of the Forest so they just took vague plant and fairy like elements to make its design.

I wish you the best of luck in the writing process and hope I could be of some help
>>
>>19543923
We have a very similar mindset. My storyline is similar, and revolves around the creature helping the protagonist partly out of respect for his politeness towards her, and partly because she knows he can help her.

Also
>pardon my autism
Gave me a genuine chuckle.

I'll try to explain the premise without giving too much away (not out of fear of criticism, but because, and pardon my autism, I don't really want to throw an unprotected work in progress out there).
Basically, Witcher takes a contract to find a missing girl. Asks questions, does some investigating, preps some gear, and heads out into the woods. He comes across this friendly, yet to be determined creature, identifies her, and makes brief conversation with her. She explains that there's "an evil in this forest" and asks if he, a witcher, is there to get rid of said evil. He says yes, obviously.
Further down the line, our Witcher uncovers an undisclosed piece of information that the contract owner neglected to share with him, which puts him into serious danger and inevitably gravely wounds him. The previous creature he encountered saves him so that he can regroup with the newly found understanding of the monster he was hired to kill, and information on where the girl is.

So she saves him because she knows he is on her side in this situation. A nice balance of selfishness and good nature, but ultimately a valuable piece on the board.
