Agnostics are skeptics who grew out of the cockiness that makes some skeptics atheists, gnostics are spritualists without a structure binding their beliefs and many of the founding fathers were gnostic.

As for devil worship? You're half right. Gnosticism is, to some, worship of what may be the devil in some religions but I suggest you research the history of set worship, how that ties into Abrahamic faiths and what it means to gnostics today.

You're just under-read on the matter, not even coming down on you because it's common on this subject.

Set was worshipped as god of self-reliance and the gathering and use of knowledge to better oneself as an individual to further the whole self-sufficient thing.

Rulership over Egypt was a deeply religious thing in the pyramid days and it wasn't uncommon for a "NO, you sheep will worship MY god now and heretics will die" situation to arise.

Now, Setesh (which became Set, then Satan and is something to have occured before) worship was seen as a threat to the "class of sheep to work for my protection" racket of a particular pharoah the name of which escapes me. Maybe Ramses? Idk but the point is that he launched a smear campaign and branded Setesh worshippers dangerous heretics who worshipped the Egyptian equivelant of the devil and threatened them with death and exile to scare new recruits off of this now taboo faith and shake old believers into silence.

It worked.

Christianity did the same thing and Satan is, as said, literally Set. The name went through a little change but the figure himself was the same. Offering up forbidden knowledge, leading those who seek it astray at the cost of their place in God's kingdom and etc and the reason this happened is the same: people who basically practiced self-taught Laveyan Satanism made for a poorly controlled worling class as they felt that needing their owners was counter to their faith.

This goes back past paganism. The concept of a "righteous god who rewards the meek and productive who work for all" vs "the evil force that leads astray those who do not value tradition and seek personal power" thing is as old as sun worship.
