is this movie, The dark song, based on esoteric lore or is it just another hollywood misrepresantation?

It isn't actually that wrong.
It's based on the abramelin ritual and I really liked the ending. Something you will not expect.

haven't seen the movie yet but
isn't the Abremelin ritual about contacting your guardian angel, a benevolent entity?

Loosely based on the operation for attaining knowledge and conversation of the holy guardian angel from the book of abramelin the mage. They fiddled with shit to make it more palatable for civilians, but it's an actual thing that very few serious students of the occult are willing to take a crack at. If you want more, go read the book. Dehn/Guth version is superior to Mathers.
Well sorry didn't know that spoilers do not work here. Anyways, good movie.
The Book of Abramelin tells the story of an Egyptian mage named Abraham pronunciation: (ɛ́jbrəham), or Abra-Melin, who taught a system of magic to Abraham of Worms, a Jew

Abramelin operation
Once this is accomplished, the magician must evoke the 12 Kings and Dukes of Hell (Lucifer, Satan, Leviathan, Belial, etc.) and bind them.
Daily reminder that all Jewish mysticism is just Archon / Devil / Alien / Satanic worship being mascaraed.
Nosce Te Ipsum
Great movie, merges some western and eastern things but digs deeper than most hollywood shit concepts
