I've even setup mission critical systems cloned with hourly differential backups. with a cold spare on standby usually in multiple physical locations to add to the tenacity of a functioning system.

Depends how you've designed your infrastructure. If you need your network running 24/7/365 you need N+1 minimum to get it up to 99.99% uptime. To make sure you don't lose connnectivity you need:

- At least two modems
- Two routers patched between each other and the modems
- two of the same computer. One as Hot/ready and the other one as Hot/Standby.

Then everything needs to be patched to the same level, by the same vendor and if patching your system you should never experience an outage ever if you send notifications for after hours while shaping a CAB plan to work on a mission critical system.

But if you don't know that and aren't trained to manage an outage in a methodical manner, a modem outage is a serious issue. Can't plan for every problem, but you can plan for most of it within reason. After that is making sure you've got capital to make sure you can build it, modify it and own it.
