the sure-fire solution is to lock a soul away.
say you have a goldfish and want it to live in eternal unlife.
instead of killing it, just put it in the freezer. It will freeze while still alive and will probably stay semi-alive for a while. It's not destroyed but it'll stay there until your fridge stops working, or you thaw it and take it out
