Ego Death?

Last night I was lying alone in the dark and began having smell-hallucinations, which is odd since i have a horrible sense of smell. I smelled cigarettes, even though I don't smoke, and eventually something like fruit or flowers, a sweet smell. After that faded i began cryinig uncontrollably. My muscles tensed up and i curled into a fetal position. My chest was heavy. It felt like every emotion was coming over me all at once, I was completely overwhelmed. I eventually started to try to calm myself down, and talked to dome friends who helped me through it. I felt extreme fear, paranoia, and so many indescribable feelings. The closest thing i could find that is somewhat similar is an ego death, but I don't feel any different today. I have been struggling with anxiety and depression, so that might be linked to it. Anyone have any similar experiences? It was the scariest thing that I have ever experienced in my life.
