The Golden Dawn was an esoteric order from the 1800's to early 1900's. The fundamental goal of the Golden Dawn was the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. The Holy Guardian Angel could also be considered God/Higher Self/whatever else. They are all roughly equivalent notions.

The Golden Dawn kept most of their stuff secret, but after a lot of ego-motivated infighting, the original order dissolved. If you want to know what the Golden Dawn taught, see the writings of Israel Regardie, a member of the no-longer-active order during its time. He has written an extensive body of work surrounding the Golden Dawn system.

Conflation of the HGA with Augoeides or Daimon was entirely an elaboration of Crowley. The original GD did NOT see Abramelin as core to their system, but rather an advanced operation on the side for deep initiates.

The reason this conflation persists is because Regardie in the Stella Matutina materials (Source of Black Brick) revised the conception into Crowley's take and the link stuck.

Though, to be fair, there's a strong case to be made for the HGA to be a compound manifestation of the Vision of Augoeides with the Voice of the Daimon or Genius in one entity.
