Ok but seriously is it not fucking crazy that we haven't had any type of major space activity since 2013 world wide? Like...we had "active" missions going to space from 1969-2013? Why is there not more activity in simply learning about our own moon and why is America the only country that's ever had men land on the moon? If we could do all of that in 1969 why have we not done anything like it since?
>>
>>19433250
>costs billions of dollars to fire a rocket
>ignores ISS missions
>>
Well, if you can come up with a reason to go back to the moon, please present it. It's just a rock covered in dust, not much going on. The only reason America went to the moon was to beat Russia there, it was more of a pride thing than anything.
>>
Money shouldn't be an issue for this long. Movies cost a lot of money but we make hundreds of them. It would literally cost 2 big budget movies to make one rocket to fly to space. 2 pirates of the carribean movies. I would sacrifice that whole franchise to explore space or just fucking land on the moon again.

A reason to go back to the moon? Well people go a lot of places multiple times. People go to see the Grand Canyon every year and that's just a big rock covered in dust so I think going back to one in SPACE is worth it. And it might be nice to see a different country go.

It's unrealistic how unphased we are that we have landed on the moon at all. Where's the pride? A country so prideful in itself but not in the moon. The whole world should have more pride in the fact that we even landed there in the first place. But we aren't. It just seems very brushed off.

I think it was and is still pretty big deal. Do you seriously think people don't care?

We are still doing shit in space. We are going to Mars to build colonies in plastic domes to withstand the dust storms, the cold and the unbreathable atmosphere. It's going to be crazy expensive, though, and hard to convince taxpayers to pay for. But don't worry, that's why we have billionaires. Elon Musk, a visionary entrepreneur and the inspiration for Iron Man, is stepping up to the task, putting up his own hard-earned money alongside just a little bit of the U.S. government's to get the job done. When, in the early 2030s, Musktown Commune is firmly established and its successes promoted in a documentary available for free direct brain-computer interface streaming, the cyber-proles will rejoice at the prospect of being able to ship off to spend the rest of their lives on the Martian frontier and be thankful for wise old Elon and the continued existence of others of his social standing for making the whole adventure possible.

"The Soviet Union, the United States and China are the only countries so far to have launched manned space flights. India's space agency declared in 2010 that it wanted to launch a human mission to the Moon by 2020, and scientists have indicated that China could do the same by 2025."

Google told me this. AFAIK 3 countries have set foot on the moon.

We've gone there multiple times. Manned missions aren't always necessary, especially since it's mostly just sample collecting, which can be done with a rover. We've also done tons of flybys which help us observe the surface better, and I'm no scientist but I assume it helps the instruments read what's under the surface better with a flyby. Having people in the spacecraft is cool and helpful when exploring new territory, but it's not always necessary.

What can we 'advance' in human civilization by wasting billions of civilizations dollars so some guys can to a dusty rock in the sky to collect smaller dusty rocks that we already have samples of anyways?
>>
>>19433424
I don't see any god damn point in going back to the moon unless we can terraform it. When that day comes we should just turn the moon into a giant farm, that would be super useful.
>>
Still missing the point, which is, we have the money and resources but we choose not to use them. We can go "back" to the moon but we don't. Which makes me skeptical that we even went in the first place.

Would it be gay or sucking dick to promote Musk and his noteworthy achievements if I, the anonymous 4chan poster behind the "young-elon.jpg" post, actually WAS Elon himslef?? Now there's a thought. This is a publicly accessible site, after all. You don't even have to use Tor or be a tech-savvy computer whiz like PayPal co-founder Elon Musk to post on this board. And would it not make a good deal of business sense for Musk to self-promote? With so many incredible achievements to speak of, it is easy to do for someone in his position. If that offends you or changes your attitude towards Musk companies or products as a consumer, well then I'm quite sorry and hope you'll give us another shot.
>>19433398
I'm generally cautious and not the biggest fan of AI in general, although I do think it would be kind of neat to meld with the machines and become a cyborg, but the first missions to Mars will have to be manned by robots. This will happen before Trump's 1st term is over. Manned SpaceX mission before the end of Trump's 2nd term.
>>19434755
That's a dreadful thing to say. I'm also skeptical that you would even know if we were in the same city. Elon Musk is part of the jet set and regularly spends 5 minutes in 5 different cities in 5 different countries in one day, while you are a fucking anonymous pleb who probably works at McDonald's and doesn't even have their own private jet.

6 times we landed on the moon but i agree with you there is probably alot more we could do with it.

only reason we ever went was war. a shame really. it seems to be the only unifying and driving force the United States ever had. war
>>
>>19433595
nigga someone already answered why we went there in the first place. It was a bitchy slapfight between the US and the Soviet Union called the Space Race. No one in the space program really cared about going to the moon specifically, more that they get there before the pinkos did. And if bitchy pride against commies isn't a believable reason for Cold War era scientists to launch a man to the moon, I don't know what is because the majority of shit humanity does is because of bitchy pride.
>>
>>19436086
I get your sentiment and don't disagree with it, but think about what you're saying. "Let's spend a whole lot of money risking the lives of our best and brightest to go somewhere really far away. We'll think of something to do when we get there." That's a silly thing to propose. If you have a specific experimental goal or a specific economic incentive then by all means, send a mission outfitted to achieve that goal. Just going for the fuck of it is dangerous and expensive and wasteful. It's not a pleasure cruise.
The next serious push for lunar exploration will likely be privately owned surveying/prospecting probes that cheap to build, cheap to launch, and specifically designed to look for easily exploitable natural resources. It's conceivable that unmanned exploration and exploitation may be our species' entire future on the moon. Realistically, it's cheaper and more practical to have earth-orbital settlements than lunar ones anyway.

>>

>>

>>
>>19433250
You realise NASA is funded by the government, right? There's no interest in lunar missions so there's no funding for them. It's pretty fucking simple.
>>
Landing on the moon was a cold war dick-waving exercise, for no other reason than the americucks were buttblasted the soviets beat them into space.
>>
>>19433250
There was a story that the Earth is running out of a specific isotope of Plutonium. I saw it on TV about a year ago. NASA has a machine that can manufacture it at about a rate of about 1Kg/year. The shuttle takes about 1.5 Kg. I wish I could reference this for you. But the point was about developing or different types of way of generating lift to get of the planet.
>>
>>19433424
Movies are privately funded. A mission to the moon would be (most likely) government funded. Are you really this autistic or are you just plain retarded?
>>
>>19433250
It's rather simple. Putting all conspiracy theories about aliens aside, there is nothing out there. Well, not on our moon anyways. Just to get to the moon will cost a bunch of money that nobody wants to waste since there isn't any profit on the moon, or anything interesting at all.

We can't go further too, so the money goes to better objectives; maintaining the ISS and studying the whole space engineering subject further.

Some probes are still being sent but there isn't much point at this time for it.
>>
>>19439153

For anybody who is familiar with Richard Hoagland, I do not agree with some of his theories. However, on a side note, he pointed out a pretty remarkable incident:

https://archive.org/stream/DarkMissionTheSecretHistoryOfNASA_201611/Richard%20Hoagland/Dark%20Mission%20-%20The%20Secret%20History%20Of%20NASA_djvu.txt

search for "great coat guy".

The tl;dr is, on an official JPL press event, during the Apollo 11 mission, a mysterious person distributed handouts to the reporters, saying the moon landing is a hoax and all was staged etc. The idea here is that they planted the meme of the moon hoax on this event, only to have it easily recalled once doubts on the official story arise. So the faked-moon-landing-story was a false-false-flag operation, covering the real story, or as Neil Armstrong called it later, the "truth protective layers".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwxsL6msdwE

One of possible "true" stories could go like this: They did indeed go to the moon, but could not show all the footage, because there were artifacts from ancient aliens/living aliens/whatever. Hence they had to fake at least _some_ of the recordings. They knew that even with the best trickery, maybe even today with CGI etc., they could not fake it perfectly, so they installed said add-on "security meme" only to resurrect it when needed.

I wonder if this unnatural brightness somehow involved in an illusion that makes clouds appear behind the moon.
I wonder if bright objects always make thin objects become transparent.
I wonder if author of this picture was aware of this and kicked brightness up just to get this sort of picture.

there is "lunar water" on the moon (different than actual water but can still be mined for fuel) not to mention we could have a base on the moon, for launching further space exploration mission. why would you want to launch from the moon instead of earth?? because it take a shit ton of fuel to get out of earths orbit...if we had a base on the moon where there is no atmosphere it would be less cost prohibitive!! there is no reason why we shouldn't have g9ne back to the moon...unless we actually never went there in the first place (see van Allen radiation belt)

>>

>>19443155

This is an optical illusion due to exposure settings.
- the moon is over exposed, so it shows up as extremely bright
- the layers of clouds in the path of the moonlight have different densities
- the thicker clouds still block enough of the moonlight so that they can still be seen even though there is a bright moon directly behind them (and they appear to be in front of the moon)
- the thinner cloud layers are just not thick enough to block the overexposed moonlight and the moon shines through them, making it look like they are being blocked by the moon.

If you think about it logically, if the moon were really travelling in the cloud layer, many passenger flights would easily see it and it would also be a flight hazard since planes usually fly above the cloud layer to avoid turbulence.
