Private firm set to land on the Moon in 2019

Astrobotic is aiming to land its unmanned Peregrine lunar lander on the surface of the Moon in two years' time. The Pittsburgh-based firm, which bowed out of Google's Lunar XPRIZE last year, will be launching its lunar lander atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket sometime in 2019.

"Astrobotic is thrilled to select a ULA launch vehicle as the means to get Peregrine to the Moon," said CEO John Thornton. "By launching with ULA, Astrobotic can rest assured our payload customers will ride on a proven launch vehicle with a solid track record of success."

The lander will be carrying 35 kilograms of payload on its initial flight however there are plans to ramp this up significantly in the future with up to 265 kilograms of payload capacity on subsequent flights. While Peregrine is currently set to become the first private lunar lander ever to touch down on the Moon, there is still an opportunity for one of the firm's competitors to beat it to the punch. The biggest threat comes from the five teams currently vying to win Google's Lunar XPRIZE, a contest that is offering a $20 million prize to the first privately funded team to successfully land a rover on the Moon's surface, drive it 500 meters from the landing site and then transmit a video back to Earth. Whether any of them will achieve this before Peregrine's 2019 mission however remains to be seen.

Nazi gold reportedly found in WWII shipwreck

A chest thought to be filled with Nazi gold has been found in the wreckage of the scuttled SS Minden. The ship, which has been located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean near Iceland, was thought to have been hauling over $130 million worth of gold from South America to Nazi-occupied Europe. After being loaded by officials from Banco Germanico, it left Brazil on September 6, 1939 before being spotted by two British cruisers - the HMS Calypso and HMS Dunedin - out at sea. To prevent its valuables from being captured by the Allies, the crew deliberately scuttled the ship and left it to sink to the bottom of the ocean.

British treasure hunters are now attempting to acquire permission from authorities in Iceland to cut a hole in the ship's hull so that the chest can be recovered and taken back to the UK. It is believed that it could contain as much as four tons of the precious metal. Whether the vessel really does contain such a large haul of gold however, as well as whether the researchers will be granted permission to retrieve it, remains for the moment at least, unclear.

Traces of blood found on the Shroud of Turin

The mysterious Turin Shroud, which is believed by many to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus himself, has long been the subject of intense scrutiny, controversy and debate. Now following a thorough forensic examination of the cloth, researchers in Italy claim to have discovered traces of human blood within its fibers. Not only that, but a scientific analysis of these blood particles has suggested that the individual in question had likely been subjected to a prolonged period of physical torture before they died.

"Hence, the presence of these biological nanoparticles found during our experiments point to a violent death for the man wrapped in the Turin Shroud," said University of Padua professor Giulio Fanti.

The discovery has reignited debate over the true origins and authenticity of the shroud which for years has divided scientists and theologians alike. Some believe the relic to be a medieval forgery while others are convinced that it is genuine and that it dates back 2,000 years. But could the presence of blood on the shroud really point to it being the actual burial cloth of Jesus? Given that the shroud has been moved around a lot over the centuries, even if there really is someone's blood on it, there is no guarantee that it has actually been there all along.

The Battle of Los Angeles: What Actually Happened

In the early morning hours of February 25, 1942, all hell was breaking loose in Los Angeles, California. America was still rattled by the attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor, and concerns about a legitimate threat on the U.S. mainland had kept military officials on the West Coast on high alert in case of an impending attack. On the night in question, gunfire erupted as officials struggled to discern the identities, and location, of several objects reportedly spotted in the early morning skies.

However, no evidence of an actual Japanese fleet ever emerged, as there had been no conclusive sightings of enemy aircraft, nor had anything resembling one been shot down in the melee that erupted that morning. Revisiting the incident many years later, a number of UFO researchers began to attribute this incident to the presence of some variety of unexplained aerial phenomenon.
