I recommend the works of Ouspensky and Gurdjieff. Start with Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraculous."

Start with Manly P. Hall's "Secret Teachings of All Ages" for a broad overview of esoteric topics. Some background in these areas gives weight to Gurdjieff's ideas. His Fourth Way does seem to be fragments of the ancient teachings.
