Yeah, you need a means of operation (or whatever the official term is, lol) for magic to manifest. Else it comes in dreams, or in some warped and minor way. "I want to fly" may mean a flying dream, an airplane ride, a fall, etc. And yes, insanity is a thing, but I've never seen it happen as a result of magic practice.
