What are some horror movies that are generally hated/critically panned, but that you actually enjoyed?

Pic related is mine. The Bye Bye Man wasn't a terrific film, but the mythology behind it was interesting, the characters were likeable enough and there were some decent scares. It wasn't mind-blowing, but it surely doesn't deserve the hate it's gotten, IMO.

Another-- The Evil Dead (2013 remake). I know that some people really liked it, but at the time it was released I remember a lot of people crapping on it and fellating the original.

To me, the remake is superior to the original in every way. It's actually scary, there's no campiness to it. The original, influential though it is, is very hard to take seriously these days.

I was led to believe that Lake Mungo would be boring as hell, but it was an absorbing experience for me. I love mockumentary/found footage stuff, and thought that this film did it far better than most.
>>
For all the hate, Babadook is actually pretty good. Except for that screaming kid in it. Fuck him.

here to post this

babadook is great and the kid is annoying at first but it all comes full circle. great movie and great attention to detail.

did anyone like mama? I thought that was pretty great.

what about darkness falls? that movie was pretty fucking rad. little older though.
>>
>>19338752
I really liked the idea behind Mama, and some of the imagery was scary, but the overall film fell flat for me. I preferred the short it was based off of.

Haven't seen Darkness Falls, but will check it out.

when they watch the cell phone vid i nearly shit my pants
>>
>>19338428
I know this one is kind of out there, but What Lies Beneath is definitely spooky.
>>
>>19338428
Probably overstated by this point, but the Babadook really rekindled my faith in modern cinematography to produce an actual horror movie instead of a rob zombie, jump scare a masturbatory amounts of blood movie.
>>
>>19338506
Spoilers maybe?

The kid is SUPPOSED to be annoying. You're supposed to dislike him and sympathise with the mother at first, otherwise the reveal would have no teeth. Anyone who complains about the kid has utterly missed the narrative this movie sets up, and that's on them because it was expertly done.
>>
>>19338854
Yeah, that scene made it all worth it. I don't know why it spooped me so bad, but it did.
>>
I liked this much, much more than I probably should have.

I wish more horror movies dove into hermeticsm

Nope. Babadook isn't great at all. It's stupid. Don't know why 4chan likes it so much.

Ah man I forgot what darkness falls is about, but I'm too scared to look it up and read about it. I remember liking it though.
Wax House (most recent) is one of the best horror films ever made.

I went into "they look like people" with mixed opinions, and it turned out to be a lot better than expected. I thought the idea of never knowing if the bearded guy was crazy was interesting, and thought it built suspense well. It also had a nice, clear cut ending. 8/10, would recommend

fuCK NO
the void is utter SHIT
If you like Lovecraft, do NOT watch this movie or you WILL cry real tears.
The Void is a drawn out gorefest of shitty acting, B-movie violence, and exactly 0 scares.
The Void is nothing but dudes shooting at monsters and cultists in a hospital. It's practically an action movie. It's the Racoon City of movies.
I fucking hate the Void so goddamn much. Please stop talking about it.

Wow you really didn't like this movie. I guess that sucks for you, because I'm quite fond of it. I've recommended it to other people too, and everyone else seemed to enjoy it. It doesn't have your typical jumpscares like a lot of movies these days, but I found the overall vibe to be nice and creepy. You didn't like the practical effects they used for the monsters? I thought they were great considering its a low budget indie film.
>>
>>19338428
The Descent
>>
>>19341804
Alright Steven Kostanski, quit hyping your movie. It was practically only jumpscares, gorn, violence, and bad acting. Sure, the props were alright. I'll give you that. But the whole thing was just shooting and blood. Not a good movie, or a lovecraftian movie. You can't have a shot of space every 20 minutes and suddenly call it lovecraft.

Last Shift really spooped me out. It's nothing special and takes a lot from other movies but for being unoriginal, it's done really well. I haven't been that creeped out by a movie in a while.
>>
>>19343463
This. Put on Last Shift one day to kill a little time and actually ended up enjoying it.
>>
>>19340182
The effects in The Void were neat, and I liked the overall mood of the film, but the story was kind of lacking and the characters were hardly developed. Nice visuals, shitty writing. Had it been 20-30 minutes longer so that the plot had room to grow, it might've been excellent.

A Return to Salem's Lot (1987). Critics hated it because it wasn't scary. I liked it because it wasn't. The first one was scary enough. This one humanized the vampires in a similar fashion to the Pagan society in The Wicker Man (1973).

Yup. That's a young Tara Reid in pic related. Wasn't she a CUTE?

>go in thinking it's a movie about Hell

>complain that the Philosopher's Stone is not the kind of thing to Indiana Jones

I'd still have liked if both concepts were their own thing (the Catacombs leading to Hell would have been an amazing story in itself, or more time could have been spent upon alchemical symbolism), but ultimately I enjoyed it.
