To get closer to the source is to hone your consciousness--not fragment it.

If you're not destroying your ego such as figures like Jesus, the Buddha, Merlin, whatever, then you're probably not getting closer to the source. They did the things they did for a reason. Most of their "followers" nowadays NEVER consider mirroring those tenets... just what is regurgitated by others.

If you are self serving and only self serving that seems to be movong away from source. If you have empathy and understanding of others and treat them as yourself, you are moving closer to source.
