Most if not all atheists are possessed by lesser demons. The weaker their faith is, the weaker the demon that can possess them will be. This is why devout Christians will have severely violent and unpredictable exorcisms, while atheists can basically exorcise themselves by reading a Bible or praying.

Also, when it comes to religious people it's hard to tell whether they're actually possessed or not. Since the demons are stronger they're also better at hiding their power level. You'd have to go around with an exorcising kit and scream ,,power of Christ compels you'' at your targets, and even then it wouldn't be guaranteed to reveal their possession.

if its demon possession they will act out a lot in abnormal ways. negative and odd behavior. if the infestation is mild they will display extreme manic symptoms and symptoms of psychosis, act "crazy" (muttering/talking to themselves) and/or agressive, moreso than usual.

if they gradually started becoming depressed and it escalated into the above symptoms, it is likely not a mental disorder. mental disorders like that don't usually come in an anxiety and depression bonus pack. when a demon is haunting a person, they become depressed and anxious more, and develop anger issues or just lash out for no good reason.

mild-severe infestations are harder to tell, but generally you will not be able to calm the person down. sometimes the person may appear very calm on the surface as well. The person might have no control over their body or hover.

Posessed people rely on programs / protocols in order to remain under control. They effectively become their own surveillance, only requiring occasional updates, when checking in with their control.

There isn't a short explanation to detection and resequencing of personality programs. People spend literal eternities devising new, and rediscovering old methods of playing this game. The field of science which describes methods of posession is called cybernetics. A rudimentary technique for discovering and desequencing posession schemas is to take first order cybernetic networks, and upgrade them to second order cybernetic networks. The recursion will break most prevalent methods of posession, such as paranoia, hopelessness, or false superiority.

If you are not motivated enough to research the logical differences between first order cybernetics and second order cybernetics, then you don't need to be playing around with anybody else's mind but your own; invoke a higher power, or leave them alone.
