i have no idea if this is a stupid question or not, but i'm drunk and curious about the significance of the cross as a grave marker.
i've tried reading articles about its significance but haven't really found anything useful. my main question is: why do many western/native american/other peoples use the cross as a marker/symbol for their dead, regardless of religion? i always thought it was a religious symbol and was not well aware of any other relevance.

Maybe it looks like a sword in the ground?
Gee, I really wonder.

done, but celtic culture things i've read still mostly point to the christian religion, whereas it's been used for other religions/cultures as well as become a universal secular thing to mark graves of the dead, so why and when did it become the norm and/or most thought of symbol for graves?

this explanation is satisfying, even if not accurate.

>when did it become the norm and/or most thought of symbol for graves?
Any proof of this outside of Christian countries?
