basically every effective modern medicine has been derived from plant medicines
so chinese herbalism may hide some gems but everything about energy and that tends to fall somewhere between fake and placebo (your results may vary)

Pretty much this. The stuff that actually works is just holdovers from before modern medicine existed. Most western interest in TCM now comes from the popularity of a translation of the Barefoot Doctor's Manual in the 1970s. It was originally issued to doctors in rural China, and it included a section on herbal remedies and traditional treatments in case modern stuff wasn't available. A group of New Agers translated it and only published the last case scenario section and marketed it as ancient wisdom that the Chinese still use because it works better.
