why does it seem like cults were so much more popular in the 1960s and 70s? were there really more of them, or are the modern ones just less talked about?

I think they're even bigger today. Look how massive groups are like Scientologists or the Jehovah's Witness. It's a hard topic to discuss their entanglement with religion. It's taboo to criticize anyone's religious views.

Also after Jonestown which gave cults a lot of exposure in the US there was a push to get US gov't more involved in anti-cult activities but this was resisted. It's an area they are more reluctant to touch. One reason my be because the US gov'ts own involvement in mind control techniques which is a large part of cults.
