Nothing that resembles us in any way possible and can be killed by usual means isnt at all as scary to me as for example intelligent beings based on plutonium who can incarnate you just by looking at you.
In wast space, surely there are many life forms which we wouldnt even call a life because their basic chemical structure is totally different from ours.

We know total shit.. maybe inside the outer lyer of sun there are fucking fire people who are highly intelligent but can never leave the temperature scale of Sun. Maybe they even try to communicate but their "intelligence" is so alien to as that we see it solar flares, white noise and what not.

good idea for a short cosmic horror story anon
>>
Let us consider a few things -
1. There exists star systems beyond count
2. Most start systems have planets
3. Of those planets, a proportion have conditions conducible to life
4. "Life" does not need to follow the concepts that we have strictly defined it (water, temperatures between 260 and 330K, as will be made clear when we find life on Titan)
Conclusion - the Universe is teeming with sentient beings who's structures, life cycle, biology, and psychology are so different to life on Earth that it would cause pant shitting terror to anyone on Earth to come across save those who's minds are so warped to accept it.

> "go back to your gay twilight vampires"
Man, just because a good portion of an author's works had elements that annoyed me doesn't mean that I hate all of his works.

Cats of Ulthar is probably the only one I think is pretty good. Other than that, he is the guy who started the "brain in the jar" trope, so I have to give him credit there.

Other than that, nah. There's only a few short stories from him that I appreciate in any way.
>>
>>19292583
Nigga that's the whole point, this is why lovecraft was such a good author. He gave you just enough, just a little itty bit to get the concept of what it was but then he left it to the reader to put the full picture together. Case in point get like 10 different people to describe what one of his monsters looks like, I will be you theynwill be different. The beauty of that is the creature is adaptable to what ever the reader associates with fear and what they think scary is, so it's timeless.

Also to say he is garbage is objectively false. The guy can be thanked for like 80% of sci-fi horror and a large part of fantasy horror, his works are referenced and or used as insperation ks almost every outlet of the Mentioned fantasy types.

You don't have to like the guy that's cool if your not into him, but to say he is a crappy writer is wrong.

>>
>>19292739
> for his time
I'm not giving passes for a guy that was good for his time. Yeah, sure, it was pretty good at the time, but that doesn't mean that he's exempt from criticism lol.
>>
>>19292747
I agree with that, everyone is open to be criticized, but to just flat out say he is a garbage writer is factually wrong considering how popular and influential he was/has been/is. That would be like saying Gary gygax was not influential in making role playing games because his first iteration of DnD was bad.
>>
>>19292773
no one is claiming he wasn't influential. we're arguing that there's not a direct correlation between being a good writer and being an influential writer because he was one but not the other (he was not a good writer)
>>
>>19292737
i wish you could see how ironic your posts are coming from a lovecraft fan, but you probably prefer real life to be like the books you read: mostly fluff and missing information that you have to fill in with your own imagination
>>
>>19292773
>>19292785 communicates this point much better than I ever will. Sure he's famous, but at the same time, there's plenty of famous works done by other authors that most people will agree aren't good.

Christ bro.
>>
>>19292159
>collapse under its own weight in space

lol
>>
>>19292797
you too are missing the point. Lovecraft isn't about silly tentacle monsters. It's about humanitys relationship with the outside, the unknown and non-human. And Lovecraft shows in his stories how bad and pathetic humanity is in this regard : all they have is superstition and and helpless religion to deal with a mechanistic and completly uncaring universe.
>>
>>19292902
>this has never been done by a good writer in a way that's actually stimulating to read
>>
if you guys want to argue about how your specific subjective taste in books implies you have a larger penis than some other random anonymous faggot on an imageboard, take it to /lit/, you'll fit right in. nobody cares if you do / don't like lovecraft / other authors. nobody knows who you are, nobody gives a shit what you think about anything, contribute to the thread or fuck off.

>>19289395
a high probability for the conditions necessary to sustain life != a high probability that life has taken advantage of those conditions, and even if that were high it wouldn't imply intelligence is common.

cockroaches and protists are better at surviving than humans. we're not sure that intelligence is inevitable. at all. (but it might be)

>>19287171
hmm. there's been a few decent eldritch horror movies made, but i can't think of much that's also in space. i'd like to think we can do better than Event Horizon but maybe not.

the first 2/3 of Sunshine is fucking amazing but then they turned it into a retarded slasher movie just in time to ruin the ending.

too bad 90% of space horror is just some kind of ripoff of Alien. not that Alien was bad, but it'd be nice to see more subtle weirdness in space.

Yes, there is no known or foreseeable material that would support such a structure, not even a structure say, 1/5 its size. It would definitely collapse. I was just pointing out it's extreme size, it would take millions of years to construct such a thing. Imagine the historical and cultural developments that take place within it. Imagine a child learning of the past years, the mythology and history of just a tiny part of the huge structure. They're part of the same structure but for most they'd be completely alien to one-another.

You're entitled to hold my opinions in contempt and I am entitled to do likewise to yours. Arguing over tastes is childish.

That said, legions of college professors, who are more credentialed and published than you or I, will affirm that his influence on the horror genre is substantial. So that's pretty much that.

>True horror exists in the depths of space far beyond the cradle of our humble gravity bound existence.

Only up until the point we start to roll out the appropriate weapons.

You think humanity hasnt stared down the systematic horror of nature before and simply asked itself what it needs to weaponize now?

Unless something comes upon us in the next few hundred years nothing will be any different than it has been.

We will meet it, we will figure out how to kill it, we will kill it.
