This was always so god-damn stupid.

It's probably by chance that two patients had similar characters appearing in their dreams (If this origin story is even true, that is) And the bullshit just escalated into mass hysteria from there. I have always thought this was created as a some sort of "self-filling prophecy" so that when someone sees this face and the legend around it he or she is much more likely to encounter similar character in their dreamworld. So, this bullshit will go around forever.
