This has been tried several times. It doesn't catch on because nobody is serious about it. It turns out that it's easier to suspend disbelief for a god who's hundreds of years established than for one you just made up.

Also, think about this, most people who are inclined to be religious are going to invest that into the religion they were raised in. If they were raised secular and are shopping around, they're going to be talking to established religious organizations. They're not looking for a skype cult with no doctrine.

What you want is a club activity where you can do things with friends who share your interests. And that's perfectly reasonable. But this is not a productive angle to work.
