But Putin and his crew saw the strategic value in having up to 8 years of a guy who's prime focus wasn't "fuck Russia", who expressed doubts about the US's commitment to NATO, who wants to step back from "Global Leadership". Willing to turn a blind eye to the annexation of Crimea and slices of Ukraine - basically giving him a free hand to do as he pleases in the region. Who's gonna stop him, the EU? He has effected a rebalancing of the global axes of power eastwards. Now the strongest leaders on the planet, in terms of optics at least, are Vladimir Putin and Xi Jingping.

Who knows. Maybe Putin isn't the strong scary internet man he probably wants people to think he is. But he has exhibited this kind of strategy in the past, and had the reason and ideological underpinnings to take these actions, to increas both his and his countries position in the world. All without firing a single bullet at an American! He has effectively succeeded where all Russian leaders since Stalin has failed. Meanwhile, Trump is busy talking shit to journalists on fucking Twitter.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm just crafting my own narrative to make sense of this silly, silly world - like so many of you do. But this is my reading of the situation.
