Nobody can know the day or time. So as soon as someone says "it's happening on this date" it literally can't happen. Sorry, but the biblical end is going to happen when there is hardly anyone left willing to talk about it. If missionaries went around spreading the word of Jesus through love and kindness instead of threats of doom and death, there would probably be less negative stigma. But no, Christianity is going to have a slow drawn out demise at the hand of hypocrites until God finally has had enough.

Different reasons I'd guess, coming down to some of these:
>Feeling to be among the chosen or in other words to feel superior.
>They sincerely want it to end, it brings a comfort to the perceived failures of their existences.
>The conspiracy theory makes them feel important in the sense of knowing things the "government" doesn't want people to know, providing a sense of identity within their self-aggrandized importance.
>To feel in control of their lives, by knowing the dates of the end of times it makes people feel like they finally have a sense of time concerning their mortality.

I'm not dismissing all conspiracy theories as a whole, just the bullshit ones where people or a group of followers claim to know the end of times. We've had so many claim things through out human history.

Prophecies are not really conspiracy theories. A conspiracy theory, by definition, requires several individuals conspiring together either to achieve a goal or suppress information. Most conspiracies attribute any gaps in the evidence to the conspiracy itself.

Why do people believe what you believe? Do conspiracy theorists really come off as people who think of themselves as superior? Do they seem like they're in control of their lives? Do they even seem like they THINK they're in control of their lives?

What's self-aggrandizing about a conspiracy theorist? They're generally hopeless collectivists who believe that individual power is a lie. If they believed in individual power, they'd theorize constructs of individual action rather than constructs built solely of social collective power of people working together.
