Probability. There are sooooo much more things that suck than there are things that are fine. Thus it is much more likely that something happens that sucks.

Sure the world seems bleak but the fact is we're moving towards utopia. The media and the internet only seem to expose the dark underbelly of the world (which there is plenty of) but throughout the world we are in one of the most peaceful times in our existence. There is a growing number of people who choose to do what they can to make the world a better place. If you should choose to surround yourself with these people and become like them you may find that your view of the world will change.

This is bullshit. If you live by your own ideals you'll only find that it's near impossible to be happy. There are a lot more people with shit ideals and morals and very wealthy, powerful people with even shittier ideals and morals, who will just drown you out with their massive ocean of shit. And if you try to make any waves they'll just crush you with a shit-tsunami of epic proportions.

well this isn't paranormal. but we can make it paranormal. the reason everything sucks is that our species was made to gather resources for our extraterrestrial overlords. the ancient "gods" took the money (gold) and ran for the most part. however a handful of them stuck around to manipulate economy and government (and religion) to milk humanity for everything it's worth.
