"Celebrity scientists" are used to gain the public's trust and keep them blind. Why do you think they're allowed to have tv shows? There's even the idea that the real Steven Hawking was replaced in the mid 80's. People will generally believe whatever a scientist tells them.

Bill Nye the "bachelor's degree in civil engineering" Guy is an expert in religion, philosophy, quantum physics, theoretical physics, astrophysics, biology, evolutionary biology, and basically every scientific field known to man.
I'm not saying you need a degree in a field to know a lot about it, but he constantly uses the appeal to authority argument so he's fair game ("99% of scientists agree with this!!!!")
