Atlantis myths predate Plato by hundreds of years. It is most likely a legend of Tartessos, a major copper age city in Iberia just west of the strait of Gibraltar. The region used to be a sort of bay at the mouth of a river which is now mostly dry land. No major ruins have ever been found but records from the eastern Mediterranean reference Tartessian traders being a major source of copper.

Copper is essential for building alien spacecraft by the way.
