It's another recommendation thread, but this time with a more specific theme than "scary".

I want to build a list of tv shows, films, books and comics that exude a sense of dark, sultry, depressive, existential horror. I'm looking for things that start out bleak, and probably get even bleaker before things are over. Characters that realize they're in a labyrinth of horrors they really do have no chance of escaping. It's not just that there's an axe murderer out in the night, it's that there's thousands of axe murderers, and it's inevitable one is going to get you, without you ever being able to stop them.
I want neo-noirs, conspiracies, uncaring universes, and horrors that make murder seem comforting.

I'm going to use True Detective (both seasons) and Thomas Ligotti as benchmark examples. So, TL;DR: more like them plz.

The Black Monday Murders from Image comics has been bretty gud so far. The general premise is that the Satanic Banking Conspiracies (a la Bohemian Grove) are real, and that the dynastic families worship Mammon, treat economics as black magic, and influence reality via an ancient, pre-human language. There's a whole cosmology behind it that each issue is slowly delving into. The art style is really grim and noir-y looking, and it's great at not dragging out mysteries with obvious answers. It's only 6 issues in so far, but each issue is much longer than the average comic, with mixed-media, typographical sections in between traditional comic pages, somewhat like Watchmen where it gives you documents to read at your will.

I was really hoping the new movie "the Void" would be what you're talking about. In a sense it was, but the rest of it was so fundamentally bad (dialogue, characters, etc.) that it wasn't really fully realized.

Just saw this movie called Savagelands the other night. Found footagekino, involves the trial of this migrant worker that survived/maybe purpetrated the massacre of an entire small town. Nobody has any clue what happened there since ge's the only sirvivor and refuses to speak about it. The catch is, he was an amateur photographer and the whole time whatever happened went down, he was documenting it using an old camera. Bretty spoopy/10 legitimately worth your time.
>>
Not exactly what you might be looking for, but check out Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. That movie is haunted as fuck.
>>
"It comes at night" is a pretty good and dark movie

Old stop motion has that dark quality, probably because it was made by stop motion animators, the most cursed artists after psychotic painters.

>Characters that realize they're in a labyrinth of horrors they really do have no chance of escaping

Patrician taste. A few Tarkovsky movies fall into this, especially Solaris.

I've got the perfect uncaring universe franchise for you, Anon. All of its characters meet oblivion after a brutal struggle for survival.

It's called reality.

I am so sorry.

The Thing (1982) was very underrated. Great movie.

I completely agree with Tarkovsky, though his films are (purposefully) slow-moving.

I'd like to add
A Dark Song (movie)
Kill List (movie)
The Hellbound Heart (book)

I've been reading this and it's pretty fucking solid imo. Wouldn't be surprised if they involved pizzagate and namedrop Bohemian Grove later on.
>>
One word:
Crossed
(Graphic Novel)
>>
Nameless is pretty close to your description. One-off series by Image Comics, goes all out in some pretty /x/ material.
>>
Black Mirror is probably one of the most depressing and existential TV shows I've ever seen. It looks at the future and how humans handle different types of technology like memory grains and AI slaves. Season 3 is more mainstream, but White Bear and White Christmas are probably the most depressing and scary episodes.
