what confuses me is why would they search for their "kin". They are so different now from any progenitor race, and would likely be intelligent enough to know they are too different.

I could see them being angry that another more alien race has taken over. If hominids were still as primitive as when they'd left, it would be easy to take over Earth.

How would man be inferior when we lived and they died out/evolved into us? Any way you look at it we'd be the more advanced form that was better fit for survival.

We would even be more closely related to them than the aliens would be because we didn't have massive amounts of genetic tampering going on for aeons. Just standard genetic drift. They would be far more removed. So much so that after aeons I doubt anyone would even remember they were from earth at all or remember their true origins. If they were used as some slave race I doubt they'd know much of their origins before they were taken away. As far as many of them would know (since they were still apes upon arrival before tampering) they were some kind of ape that got taken from who knows where and uplifted by this race.

Several million years of tampering to create something that could be used for its mental prowess. Plus, I'm implying that they view us as inferior, not that this is actually so.

You're assuming they won't have some "draw" to their origins just as we do, and considering they're most likely using the precursor's tech, they could probably find such records in some mega-archive.
