I find this to be an easy introduction to get started if you're unfamiliar.

The important thing to remember is the flexible and casual nature of the devotion. A lot of passion and ceremony goes into it, but there is very little doctrine and it is meant to be intimate. The sharing of the cigarette is the most iconic way this intimacy is shown.

There are different explanations as to her origin and nature. The most traditional approach is that she is not necessarily a sapient entity, but instead an abstraction of Death itself.
