Lost Mesopotamian City Discovered in Iraq

Archaeologists have unearthed the long-lost ruins of a 4,000-year-old city known as Xarab-i Kilashin. Situated on the banks of the Great Zab river, the discovery was made during an archaeological investigation of the Fertile Crescent - a 3,000-square-kilometer region that many believe to have been the birthplace of agriculture sometime around 10,000 years ago.

The area had been off-limits for a long time due to political instability and the presence of ISIS.

"What is surprising is the size of this settlement," said Rafal Kolinski of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. "All the earlier settlements evidenced in the area are very small in size, rarely exceeding 1 hectare. The same can be said of settlements contemporary to Xarab-i Kilashin, our urban site, which were mere villages."

Covering a semi-circular area of the northern river bank with a diameter of around 300 meters, the site of Xarab-i Kilashin has already yielded an astonishing array of over 12,000 artefacts, including pieces of pottery and terracotta stamps used in weaving. The city was thought to have been home to a dignitary who ruled over the surrounding lands.

Besides Xarab-i Kilashin, the archaeologists discovered about 260 new settlements, increasing the known number in the little-studied area five-fold. The team used satellite images, records from the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Baghdad, fieldwork and interviews with local people to identify sites of historical importance. The archaeologists plan to continue their investigation of the city and nearby settlements, releasing a series of maps of the area by 2018.

Archaeologists Uncover Ruins of Lost Chinese Temple

Archaeologists have discovered a temple - deemed to have been lost for nearly a millennium - in downtown Chengdu, capital of China's Sichuan province. The Fugan Temple was a famous temple that lasted from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).

Daoxuan, a famous Tang Dynasty (618-907) monk, once wrote that an official rite to pray for rain to end a persistent drought was held in front of the temple, and it rained as if the prayers had been heard in heaven. That was how the temple got its name Fugan, which means "feeling the blessing". Famous Tang Dynasty poet Liu Yuxi also wrote a poem to commemorate the temple's renovation. However, the temple suffered damage during wars and all traces of its physical existence disappeared during the later period of the Song dynasty.

The excavation team has found the temple's foundation, ruins of surrounding buildings, wells, roads and ditches, as well as some 80 ancient tombs that date back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties (1600-256 BC). In the temple's surroundings, they have unearthed large amounts of household tools and utensils and building materials dating back to various periods from the Song to Ming dynasties. Archaeologists also unearthed more than 1,000 tablets inscribed with Buddhist scriptures and more than 500 pieces of stone sculpture, as well as glazed tiles with inscriptions.

The temple's discovery could greatly contribute to the study of the spread of Buddhism in China during that time, said Mr Wang Yi, director of the Chengdu Cultural Relic Research Institute.

Mozambique Police Warn Bald Men After Attacks

Bald men in Mozambique could be targets of ritual attacks, police have warned, after the recent killing of five men for their body parts. Two suspects have been arrested in the central district of Milange, where the killings occurred.

>"The belief is that the head of a bald man contains gold,"
said Afonso Dias, a police commander in Mozambique's central Zambezia province.

Albino people have also been killed in the region for ritual purposes. Three men have been killed in the past week alone.

Police think the notion of a bald head containing gold is a ruse by witchdoctors to get clients to take a person's head to them. "Their motive comes from superstition and culture - the local community thinks bald individuals are rich," Commander Dias is reported as having told a press conference in Maputo.

Expanded Perspectives: Missing Hunters

This week on Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how an ancient, rectangular copper mask recently found in the southern Andes in Argentina is about 3,000 years old — one of the oldest human-made metal object from South America — and its discovery challenges the accepted idea that South American metalworking originated in Peru, according to archaeologists. Then, hitting the snooze button at weekends to make up for early starts during the week may be doing more harm than good. Then, recently a cattleman found one of his cows dead and showing signs of a mysterious mutilation. Then, a very strange couple was recently spotted in Las Vegas. After the break, Cam brings up some very disturbing accounts of missing hunters. These hunters were well versed in the outdoors and experienced in the art of bushcraft and survival. It seems unexplainable that they would disappear under mysterious circumstances. All of this and more on this weeks episode of Expanded Perspectives!

Astonishing Legends: The Jersey Devil - Prince of the Pine Barrens (Part 1)

They say if you meet someone from New Jersey, Pennsylvania or New York, you don't ask them if they've heard of the "Jersey Devil," you ask them if they've had some kind of encounter with it. The legend of the curious cryptid is so prolific, they've no doubt heard of it, and if they've spent any time near the Pine Barrens of "The Garden State," more often than not you'll find they've experienced some evidence of the beast, or know someone who has. Folklorists say that there are more than 30 variations of the legend, but the main origin story of New Jersey's own "Official Demon" goes all the way back to 1735, and a Mrs. Leeds of Galloway, NJ, who upon a difficult delivery of her 13th child, exclaimed it might as well be a devil – which, if the tale is to be believed, you should never do. Since then, the story has been so popular that the idea of The Jersey Devil has made its way into movies, television, and video games, and is even the inspiration for the name of New Jersey's National Hockey League team. But why has this tale endured for at least 282 years? Is it because somehow the legend is just so fantastic that people can't forget it? Or is it because, as so many residents throughout the years have claimed, from New Jersey's eastern shores, through the mysterious Pine Barrens all the way to western Pennsylvania, something really is out there?
