Okay, so as far as I can tell, most writings agree on one thing (so I conclude that it likely did actually originate from Egyptian stuff):
You need to somehow induce an "ego-loss" (a temporary loss of identity) in a person, and that person has to be able to say "I am <insert deity>". At which point that person, in a way, really IS that deity, so it is "summoned" and can be conversed with. Could be thought of as a form of "channeling", I guess, or at least that's a close enough concept. This is common in the Crowley stuff and Kemetism too.
