Not OP, but haitian vodou isn't a system of magic per se, it's a religion. That's where you got it wrong. The loa are intercessors between humans and a supreme diety referred to as Bondye. In that sense, it is monotheistic. In addition, ancetral worship is usually given priority over working with the lwa. What I think sets it apart from Western religions for some people is how spirits are served. Altars are set up, they're given offerings, during ceremonies they take possession of individuals, animals are occasionally sacrificed..

Modern religions don't practice these things in the same way, so to some outsiders it looks like witchcraft, but folk magic is regarded as a different beast. In Louisiana, hoodoo is more commonly integrated with voodoo.
